

H. George Hughes, 93, of Jackson, passed away on April 20th after a brief illness. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, he moved to Toms River in 1934, Lakewood in 1944 after marrying his beloved Dorothy and had resided in Jackson since 1969. He is predeceased by his parents Frank and Eva Hughes, his brother Bob and his wife of 66 years Dorothy. He is survived by his son Frank L. Hughes, grandchildren Lara Reibold and husband Dale of Andover, Ohio, Susanne Hughes and husband Brendan of Scotch Plains, Frank L Hughes, Jr. and Kelly Hughes of Toms River and two great grandchildren, Amber and Matthew Degnan of Ohio, plus several nieces and nephews.
George graduated from Toms River High School in 1936, served his country during World War II as a Master Sergeant in the Army in the 69th Division. His service record was distinguished by the Combat Infantry Badge, the Bronze Star, and the American and European Campaign medals, the Army of Occupation Medal and the New Jersey Distinguished Services Medal. He was a former member of the Board of Directors of the American Federation of Muscians Local 399, the Lakewood Board of Education, Past President of the Lakewood Lions Club, Life Member of the Lakewood Elks # 1432, former member of the Lakewood Blackhawks, Charter Member of the Board of Trustees of Meadowbrook Village. He retired after twenty-six years from Seaside Furniture Shop. George is probably best remembered as one of the shore’s finest guitarists, performing with many ensembles over the years as well as a great duo with Dorothy at the piano. He was an avid golfer, a member of the St. Mary’s of the Lake Parish in Lakewood and a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather….a friend to all who knew him.
The Visitation will be held on Monday, April 23, 2012, at the Anderson & Campbell Funeral Home, 3010 Ridgeway Rd., Manchester, NJ 08759, from 2-4 & 7-9 pm. Services to start at the funeral home at 9 am. A Mass will be offered at 10:30 am, at St. Mary of the Lake RC Church, 43 Madison Avenue, Lakewood, NJ 08701.
