

John R. "Jack" Butterworth, 70, of Manchester, passed away peacefully in his sleep Sunday morning, May 13 after battling cancer for the past year; in his home with his wife by his side. Jack was born in Paterson, on August 8, 1941 and grew up in Wayne, graduated from Wayne High School in 1959, and entered active duty service in the United States Army. There he received the US Army Good Conduct Medal, and earned a letter of commendation for his service during the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. He was the only service member in West Germany to certify a nuclear weapon "war reserve ready." Following his honorable discharge, Jack graduated from Fairleigh Dickinson University with a B.S. in Economics and a M.B.A. in Finance. Later he earned multiple certificates from Ocean County College in the fields of web design and programming. Following his education, Jack worked as Manager Cost Accounting, for General Dynamics Electro Dynamics Division; Burlington Industries, Lamp Division; President, CEO, CFO, Owner of Alps Supply Company Inc. and manager/cost accountant/specialist for multiple local businesses through the age of 69.
Jack is survived by his wife of 37 years, Catherine Butterworth, his daughter and husband Michelle and Edward Unger, his grandson and wife Captain Christopher and Sara Vanchure, granddaughter Rianna Vanchure and Kim Whitlock, his brother William and wife Juanita, sister Carol and late husband Kenneth Rathyen, nieces and nephews, William, Robert, Kenneth, John, Kimberly, James, and 3 great nephews and nieces.
Visitation and a short service will be held from 12 to 4 p.m. Thursday at the Anderson & Campbell Funeral Home, 3010 Ridgeway Rd. (Route 571), Manchester.
