Marylou was born at home on Raritan Avenue in Highland Park, NJ on November 29th, 1932 to Louis and Lucile Fritz. She grew up in a close family home that she shared with her three siblings, Theresa, Catherine, and John. Graduating from St. Peters High School at the age of 16, she went to work for Chemical Bank in New York City in their management training program. It was during this time in NYC that she met the love of her life, her husband Flavius Gugiielmo. They soon settled down in East Brunswick, before finding their way in the 1990’s to Deltona, Florida, and eventually back up to NJ where she currently resided.
Marylou was an active and vibrant person, who was constantly doing for others, without ever asking for anything in return. Her greatest joys were time spent with her family and friends. She loved to cook, and was often asked by many if she could make one of her signature recipes–especially her lasagna, eggplant, or chicken cacciatore. Always looking for a new challenge, Marylou organized and ran the monthly Casino trips for her community, and made sure every detail was meticulously planned–including who would sit next to whom and which brand of cookie everyone would get on the bus, She had to make sure her people were happy, and like everyone else who knew Marylou, their needs and comfort were her priority. When not flocking to Resorts casino to play her beloved Temple of Tiger Slot Machine, Marylou and a group of friends would be found competitively playing Bingo all around Ocean County.
Marylou was an active member of St. John’s RC church in Lakehurst, and devoutly watched EWTN network to do her daily rosary and novena for her loved ones prayers and needs. Faith was especially important to Marylou, and many prayers were offered up for her beloved sports teams: The NY Giants, The NY Yankees, and Temple Owls Basketball. Of recent passions for Marylou was the NY Times Wordle puzzle with which she had many competitors who always seemed to solve the puzzle one step more than Marylou–who would also remind everyone who played her that she does it on a pad and paper–just to make sure everyone knew she was still the boss.
Aside from word games, and jigsaw puzzles Marylou’s other “hidden” passion was her love of college basketball, and particularly March Madness. Year after year “Mama G” made sure her entries were placed for a variety of pools–with which her success rate rivaled some of the best prognosticators around. Such became her reputation that often people would wait to get their own picks in, so they could scout the teams Marylou felt were going to win–very often she was right. One anecdote was when Florida Gulf Coast scored an improbable first round upset that almost everyone–but Marylou–guess incorrectly. When an exasperated person looked at the correct selection on Marylou’s bracket, they wondered aloud “How did she pick this game?” to which she replied when asked “what it was easy…they were 24-4 in conference play” a statistic that very few had even picked up, on a team little knew anything about–except for Marylou. She was on it from the beginning.
Marylou is survived by her children Donna and her husband Keith, her son Dr. Flavius “Buddy” Guglielmo and his wife Audrey, and her son Louis and his wife Christine. She is the beloved grandmother of six Maryann, David and his wife Wenche, Dana, Daniel, Amy and her husband Bryan, and Daniel. Marylou is also “GiGi” to two great grandchildren Kasen and Everly.
