
Akram Z. Farag, M.D., 55, of Mansfield died Tuesday evening, December 16, 2003 at MedCentral Mansfield. Dr. Farag was born April 10, 1948 in Alexandria, Egypt living in the Mansfield area since 1980 where he began his private practice as an ear, nose and throat specialist. He was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church. He graduated from Alexandria University in Egypt in 1971. Dr. Farag received his specialty training at Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago, Georgetown University Hospital in Washington D.C., Franklin Square Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, Ninewel Hospital, University of Dundee in Scotland and Royal Infirmary, in Hull, England. He received his certification through the American Board of Otolaryngology. He joined the staff of Mansfield General Hospital in 1981 where he was a member of the Credentials Committee from 1991-1995 and chairman in 1995. He served on the Credentials Task Force during the merger with Shelby Hospital in 1996. The Task Force created new delineation documents for the new MedCentral Health System. Dr. Farag was president of the MedCentral Health System Medical Staff in 1998 and president of the Richland County Medical Society in 2002.
He is survived by his wife, Nahad; three sons, Alexander, Andrew and John Farag of Mansfield; his mother, Isis Farag of Illinois; three brothers, Osama of Calfornia, Tarek of Illinois and Baher of Connecticut; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father.
Friends may call at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors Friday from 6-9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church conducted by Father Herb Weber. Burial will follow in Mansfield Catholic Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Msgr. Edward C. Dunn Foundation for Education.
