
Andrew Gottfried, 79, of Mansfield died Tuesday, January 9, 2001, at Cleveland Clinic following a 24 year battle with heart disease. Mr. Gottfried was born April 17, 1921, in Mansfield, Ohio living in the area all of his life. He graduated from Madison High School, class of 1939. He served four years in the U.S. Navy during WWII as a Machinist Mate 1st class on the Sub Chaser PC 1086. Mr. Gottfried retired from Westinghouse after 41 years as a tool and die maker. He was also employed with RCA Whirlpool and Ideal Electric and taught Machine Trades at Madison Adult Education. Mr. Gottfried was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church for 49 years, serving eight years on the Church Council and maintaining the church bells for many years. He was also a member of Venus Masonic Lodge #152 F. & A.M., McVey Post #16, the International Union of Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers, the American Association of Retired Persons and the Lexington Area Senior Citizens. He was an enthusiastic hunter, fisherman, birdwatcher, and lover of dogs. He was an avid reader and enjoyed woodworking and crafts as well as serving as neighborhood handyman. He and his family enjoyed traveling throughout the United States. Mr. Gottfried's children and grandchildren were his pride and joy and he was surrounded by his family at the time of his death.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Clariss 'Pat' Buck Gottfried, whom he married April 28, 1946; two daughters and sons-in-law, Betsy & Edward Rollings of Matteson, Illinois and Kathleen & Al Kapustar of Mansfield; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Russell Gottfried of Mansfield and Bruce & Jayne Gottfried of Granville, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Kent Kapustar and his wife Heather, Kara, Kristen, and Katie Kapustar, Kim and A.J. Rollings, and Adam and Brian Gottfried; three brothers and sisters-in-law, John & Gladys Gottfried and Paul & Dalee Gottfried, all of Mansfield, and Robert & Amalia Gottfried of Bellvue, Nebraska; one sister and brother-in-law, Betty & Mervin DeLong; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Jackson; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew & Barbara Brandt Gottfried; an infant son; three sisters, Barbara, Pauline, and Catherine; and his in-laws, Walter & Bertha Buck.
Friends may call at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors Thursday from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Friday at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church conducted by Rev. Drs. George Lambert and Wray C. Smith. Burial will be in Mansfield Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, the American Red Cross, or the American Heart Association.
