
Carl A. Smart, 55, of Shiloh, died Monday, July 14, 2003 at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation following a brief illness. Born December 13, 1947 in Fremont, Ohio, Carl graduated from Clyde High School in 1966. He later attended Ashland College, where he met his future wife, Diana Williams. They married during the middle of his junior year on February 1, 1969. He graduated from Ashland College with a Bachelors degree in Education in 1970 and continued his education by receiving his Masters Degree in Special Education at Kent State University in 1976. Carl began his teaching career at Crestview High School as a special education teacher. He later taught at Crestview Elementary School where he started his position as a physical education teacher. His love for working with kids was easily seen throughout his 30 year teaching and coaching career which ended with his retirement in 2000. Even in retirement, he continued helping kids by coaching High School and Middle School track in the Plymouth-Shiloh local school system. He was a member of the Ohio Genealogical Society and the Shiloh Area Historical Society. He was also a member of the McDonald's Collectors Club of Northeast Ohio and had a collection of his own that was known to many. He was an active citizen in the Shiloh community, volunteering for many years as a Boy Scout Leader as well as being a member of the Mt. Hope Lutheran Church where he served as Choir Director and Adult Sunday School Teacher.
Carl will be greatly missed by his wife of 34 years, Diana Smart; one son and daughter-in-law, Todd and Missy Smart of Shiloh; four daughters and sons-in-law, Danell and Rico Allen of Mansfield; Michelle and Shawn Michael; Montelle Smart; and Richelle Smart all of Shiloh; four grandchildren, Madisyn and Karsyn Smart; Arianna Allen and Trae Michael; one sister and brother-in-law, Rosemary and Ron Ryman of Bowling Green; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Phil and Judy Smart of Fremont; Greg and Diane Smart of Troy; and Avery and Claudia Smart of Columbus; his mother-in-law, Dorothy Williams of Shiloh; two sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Karen and Art Monastere and Cathy and Mike Anderson; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl W. and Mary J. Cross Smart.
Friends may call at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors on Thursday, July 17, 2003 from 2-4 and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Mt. Hope Lutheran Church in Shiloh. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Mt.
