

Charles Joseph Sauder, 90, of Sunbury, formerly of Mansfield, passed away Thursday, March 2, 2017 at Country View of Sunbury. Born November 13, 1926 in Mansfield, he was the son of Aaron A. and Katharina "Katie" (Schneider) Sauder.
Charles was a proud veteran of the United States Army serving during World War II. He graduated as class Valedictorian of Mansfield Senior High School in 1945. He went on to attain a Bachelor Degree from the College of Wooster, and later on he earned his Masters Degree from The Ohio State University. Charles also furthered his education at the Bowling Green State University. Charles taught mathematics at Mansfield City Schools for over thirty-five years, retiring in 1984, and also taught at The Ohio State University Mansfield Campus. He chose to be a teacher to be able to spend quality time with his family whom he loved dearly. Following retirement, Charles worked for Allprints and also Enhance Products. He was a faithful member of the Apostolic Christian Church for over seventy years where he taught Sunday School and served as a Superintendent and Church Trustee. He was also the Vesper Choir Director and Song Leader at the church. Charles was also a member of Gideon's, Phi Beta Kappa, Kappa Mu Epsilon, MEA, OEA, NEA, National Honor Society and was a Red Cross Volunteer. He was inducted into the Mansfield Senior High School Athletic Hall of Fame for his contributions and time in the ticketing booths at sporting events. Charles was an avid gardener and enjoyed being active and outdoors.
He is survived by his sons, Douglas (Barbara) Sauder of Dublin, Ohio, Russell (Wendy) Sauder of Charlotte, North Carolina, Mel (Carol) Sauder of Mesa, Arizona and Stanley (Judy) Sauder of Westerville, Ohio; 12 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; a brother, Gene Sauder of Scottsdale, Arizona; a sister-in-law, Marion Sauder of Ashland; and a host of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marcella I. (Steffen) Sauder in 2012; six sisters; one brother; and a grandchild.
Friends may call from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 7, 2017 at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington-Springmill Road, Ontario. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 8, 2017 at the Apostolic Christian Church, 84 North Illinois Avenue, Mansfield, officiated by the church. Burial will follow in Lantz Cemetery.
