
David L. Payne, 60, of Mansfield, died unexpectedly Thursday, September 30, 2010, at MedCentral Mansfield. Born November 21, 1949, in Shelby, he was the son of Jack L. and Doris Bender Payne. A veteran of the United States Air Force, he was employed as an Engineer for Midwest Aircraft Products. A street rod enthusiast, David had a 1939 Chevy Coupe that was the love of his life. He also collected Hot Wheels and built model cars and airplanes. David was a member of the Amvets Post #26 where he was the coordinator for the Amvets car show for the past two years. A noted workaholic, David took great pride in his yard and flower garden as it was always immaculate. He also enjoyed following the Cleveland Cavaliers and The Ohio State Buckeyes.
Surviving are his wife, Karen Meadows Payne; a daughter, Angela Boardman of Jacksonville, FL; two grandchildren, Megan Ebbreght and Sean Boardman both of Florida; his father, Jack Payne of Shelby; a brother, Mick Payne of Mansfield; a sister, Vicky Detry of West Jordon, Utah; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Denny and Mary Jo Isch of Mansfield and Ron and Linda Laughlin of Mansfield; two beloved dogs, Sophie and Little Bit; his pet bird, Willy; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friends, Gene Laser, Jim Miller, Lee Crall and Chris Crall. He was preceded in death by his mother and his grandparents.
Friends may call from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, October 3, 2010, at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington-Springmill Road, Mansfield. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, October 4, 2010, at Diamond Hills Baptist Church, 647 S. Diamond St., Mansfield conducted by Rev. Christopher R. Thomas. Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park where full military services will be conducted by the Richland County Joint Veterans Council. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.
