
George C. Simmons, 71, formerly of Weston, West Virginia, passed away Sunday, September 21, 2008, following an extended illness. Born April 16, 1937 in Upshur County, West Virginia, he was the son of Gilsie Russell Tenney and the late Oral Simmons. George worked in the timber industry, on oil rigs and as a painter. A "jack of all trades", he enjoyed spending his free time with his family and friends. He also enjoyed hunting and playing the lottery.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Edna Neal Simmons, whom he married December 15, 1961; three sons, Stephen R. Simmons of Weston, WV, George J. Simmons and Jeffrey D. Simmons, both of Mansfield; and three daughters, Victoria F. Miller of Scottdale, PA, Connie K. Simmons of Mansfield and Alice R. Nicholson of Weston, WV. He is also survived by his mother, Gilsie Tenney; eleven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Wilma Woody, Patty Gillam, Mary Coe and Charlotte Peck, all of Upshur County, WV. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one son, Robert G. Simmons; one brother, Donald Simmons; and one sister, Annabelle Lane.
Friends may call from 4-7 p.m., Tuesday, September 23, 2008 at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 3:00 p.m., Bethlehem United Methodist Church, Upshur County, WV with Rev. Robert Heavner officiating. Burial will be in Bethlehem Cemetery.
