Howard L. Carney, 75, of Mansfield, died Monday, December 25, 2006 at Altercare of Bucyrus after a long illness. Born August 28, 1931 in Jackson County, West Virginia, he was the son of the late Howard R. Carney and Evalee Casto-Carney Carmichael. Howard served in the US Army from June 1954 to August 1957 as a Specialist Second Class and was honorably discharged. He was a remarkable amateur boxer that led him to a Professional Boxing Career in California training with Archie Moore, 'Irish' Jerry Quarry, and Mike Quarry, and was promoted by Sammy Angot. Howard had a winning record and a fighting spirit guys still talk about today. He returned to live in Mansfield in 1957 and began training and promoting young boxers in the area for over 30 years, including, his son, Chris Carney, a four time Golden Gloves winner, and retired professional and young prodigy, 'Prince' Charles Williams, whom he trained from a youth to 19 years of age. Howard was proud to have trained 'Prince' early on and see him achieve great success as the Light Heavy Weight Champion in the late 1980's. We'll always remember Charles bringing over his Belt for dad to wear, and how proud Dad was to put it on with Charles by his side. Howard retired from GM after 30 years and found great joy in stock car racing and racing field trial dogs with his brother Joe, whom he shared many great moments. He also raised game cocks, bird dogs, and coon dogs, and loved to hunt.
He is survived by four children and their spouses, Howard Neal and Wilma Carney, John Chris and Sandra Carney, all of Mansfield, Jennifer and Charles Briner of Shelby, and Debra and Brad Dunn of Florida, nine grandchildren, Jeanelle and Shawn Au, Deanna and Scott Jennings, Jeremy Carney, Jessica Carney, all of Mansfield, Aubrie Carney, Christopher Briner, both of Shelby, Mary Alyssa Carney, and Reese Dunn, both of Florida; seven great-grandchildren, Joshua Jeffers, Alex and Zec Speelman, Scottie Jennings, Emily Carney, Makayala Au, and Kaleb Rhinehart; three sisters; and four brothers. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Paula Carney; his parents; and one brother, Joe Carney.
Military graveside services conducted by the Richland County Joint Burial Detail will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, December 29, 2006 at Mansfield Memorial Park with Pastor Steven Bond officiating.
