Howard D. Steele, 90, of 1496 W. Fourth Street died early Monday morning February 21, 2000 at MedCentral Mansfield following a brief illness. Mr. Steele was born July 28, 1909 in Fayette County, Ohio and has resided in the area all his life. He attended St. John's United Church of Christ and was a member of Eagles 336, a 50-year member of the Moose in Galion, the Owls in Mansfield, Sons of Herman, the Liederkranz, Crestline Eagles, and a member of NRA. He retired after 39 years from Hercules in Galion as a welder. Surviving are one daughter, Joan Mavros of Huron, OH; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Irene Wirick of Mt. Vernon, OH; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, William & Mary Hunt Steele; three brothers, Claude Steele, Gerald Steele, & Harold Steele; and two sisters, Nellie Beck & Daisy Steele. Graveside services will be held Friday February 25, 2000 at 2:00 p.m., conducted by Rev. Lon McSherley. Burial will be held in Mansfield Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the donor's choice. Wappner Funeral Directors is handling local arrangements.
