

James R. Altaffer, 80, of Mansfield, passed away at his home on Wednesday, January 30, 2019. James was born on November 11, 1938 in Mansfield, Ohio. He was the son of the late Herbert and Mary (Berry) Altaffer.
James was devoted to his family as a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather. His family was most important to him. A hard worker, James retired from AK Steel after 35 years, and after retirement, went to work at the City of Mansfield with the sewer department for 10 years. He was a member of the Mansfield Owls and the Eagles. James spent his free time squirrel and rabbit hunting, mushroom hunting, and playing cards. He was an avid Cleveland sports fan.
James leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 58 years, Sandra (Elliott) Altaffer; children, Penny (Scott) Baker, Tammy (John) Kimble, and James H. Altaffer; grandchildren, Jeri (Adam) Holman, Scott Baker, Autumn (EJ) Eustice, Brittany (Gordon) Muir, Bryce Kimble, and Alex Baker; great-grandchildren, Archer, Willow, Beckett, and Weslynn; sister, Kathy Mawhorr; and a brother, William Altaffer. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Betty Sorensen and Rosemary Cox; and a brother-in-law and best friend whom he spent a lot of time with, Danny Elliott.
There will be no public services observed. Memorial contributions may be made in memory of James to the American Lung Association. The Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors is honored to serve the Altaffer family.
