
Jean Gorman Bates, 89, formerly of Mansfield, died at Cypress Palms, Largo Florida, from an extended illness. She was the mother of Thomas B. Jeanie Bates of Columbia, South Carolina; grandmother to Edward Jennifer Bates of Charlotte, North Carolina, Lynn Bates of Tampa, Florida, Dawn Utset of Boca Raton, Florida, and Elizabeth Veach of Ann Arbor, Michigan.
She was born November 8, 1916 in Mansfield to J.C. and Ruth Barnes Gorman. Jean graduated from Mansfield Senior High School in 1933 and received a teaching degree from the University of Wisconsin. Jean taught high school in Lakeland, Florida. She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church. While residing in Sand Key, Florida, she enjoyed world travel. Jean found time to support the Florida Sheriff's Youth Camp and various organizations against violence to women. Jean was also a master bridge player for many years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas I. Bates; son Robert S. Bates; and both parents. Surviving are her brother, James C. Marge Gorman of Mansfield; and several nieces and nephews.
There will be a private family memorial service with no public calling hours. The Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors assisted the family with arrangements.
