
Joseph M. Sauer, 88, of Mansfield, died Thursday, October 30, 2008, at home. Born April 30, 1920, in Richland County, he was the son of the late Michael N. and Elizabeth Knapp Sauer and was married to the late Florence Ashbrook Sauer on October 17, 1948. Joe retired from Westinghouse Corp. after 44 years of service. He attended Ontario United Methodist Church. He enjoyed farming, hunting, fishing, dancing, playing euchre, and bowling on a mixed doubles league with his wife. Joe was an amateur boxer and a 3-time Golden Gloves Champion in the Welterweight Division. A nature lover, he enjoyed walking in the woods while hunting, enjoying the beautiful scenery and will always be remembered for his great storytelling.
He is survived by three children, Joe R. Sauer, Jenny Wayne Motley and Linda Sauer, all of Mansfield; eight grandchildren, Teresa Grant Weaver of Lexington, Melisa Chris Wheeler of RI, Julie Zachary Duerr of Columbus, Andi Motley of Columbus, Tara Sauer of Toledo, Zack Rose of Mansfield, Joshua Rose of Shelby and Amber Rose of Mansfield; five great-grandchildren, Carina, Garet, Elyana Weaver, Maddox and Eliza Wheeler; a brother, Mike Sauer of Cleveland Heights; two sisters, Elizabeth Bender of Mansfield and Mary Ella Greenland of Strongsville; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and brother, Albert Sauer.
Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Sunday, November 2, 2008, at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington-Springmill Road. Funeral services will be Monday at 1:00 p.m. in the funeral home with Pastor Dave Case officiating. Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to HomeCare Matters or the Ontario United Methodist Church.
