
Lyla Elswick, 75, of Mansfield, passed away early Sunday morning at Twin Oaks Nursing Home in Mansfield. She was born October 22, 1933 to the late Walter and Hazel Johnson Powers. Lyla graduated from Cleveland High School in Virginia, where she played on the basketball team. She had previously worked for Landmark Farm Bureau, Mac Honda and retired as a bookkeeper with McCune Cycle World. Her strong and admirable personal traits as a very private and meticulous person served her well throughout her life. She enjoyed her work and keeping busy with various activities. Lyla was a member of McElroy Road Church of Christ.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, John and Pat Elswick of Mansfield, Ohio; three grandchildren, Jennifer Elswick fiancé, Kevin Shrader of Mansfield, Shawn Elswick fiancée, Sarah Roth of Columbus and Chris Elswick of Mansfield; two great-grandchildren, Olivia and Allie Shrader of Mansfield; two brothers, Bob Powers of Lebanon, VA and Marvin Powers of Cleveland, VA; five sisters, Mary O.D. Amos, Jean Sutherland, all of Cleveland, VA, Trula George Woods of Bluff City, TN, Lora "Bea" Tom Sarver of Louisville, KY and Junell Dan Amyx of Kingsport, TN; numerous nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law, Margie Powers of Indianapolis, IN. She was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis "Ramie" Elswick, whom she married May 28, 1951; son, Curtis Lynn Elswick; brother, Johnny Powers; and her parents.
Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 98 S. Diamond St., Mansfield. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. in the funeral home with Rev. Frank Moore officiating. Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park.
