

Michael Riegel, 89, of Mansfield, passed away surrounded by his loving family Thursday, September 15, 2011 at Hospice of North Central Ohio. Born April 10, 1922 in Surchin, Yugoslavia, he was the son of Johann and Magdalena (Bieber) Riegel. Michael served in the German Air Force during World War II. He was stationed in Greece and was a mechanic for the planes. Michael was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ for over 55 years. He began his career as a sheet metal worker with Charles Hoffman Co. and retired in 1986 from Mike Volk Co. Michael was also a member of the Sheet Metal Union #33 for 55 years. An honorary member of Mansfield Liederkranz for over 50 years, Michael enjoyed dancing with his wife, “Leni” and the Liederkranz Senior Dancers. He enjoyed raising homing pigeons and was a member of Mansfield Liederkranz Racing Pigeon Association from 1961-2003. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family.
He is survived by his children, Richard (Karen) Riegel, Anna (Glenn) Moore, Rosie (Larry) Eberts, and Helen Riegel (fiance, Roger Partin); grandchildren, Michael A. (Beth) Riegel, Michelle (Billy) Evans, Brad (Mistee) Moore, Ben Moore, Kyle (Bettina) Eberts, Kevin Eberts, and Caleb Riegel-Partin; great grandchildren, Grace Riegel, Mitch Riegel, Hunter Evans, Gage Evans, Cydney Moore, Cole Moore, Gabriel Eberts, and Baby Girl Eberts; and close relatives, Frank (Irmgard) Wolf and Katie Muff. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Magdalena “Leni” (Wolf) Riegel; brothers, Johann, Rudolph, and Jakob Riegel, and sister, Magdalena.
Friends may call Sunday, September 18, 2011 from 2:00-5:00 p.m. at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington-Springmill Rd., Ontario. Funeral services will be held Monday, September 19, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home, conducted by Rev. Steven Mortach. Burial will follow in Mansfield Cemetery.
