
Norma Crotty, 86, of Mansfield, died Friday, February 2, 2007, at MedCentral Mansfield Hospital. Born August 19, 1920, in Mansfield, she was the daughter of William and Laura Remy Harrison. Norma retired from Mansfield General Hospital as the Head Nurse of Pediatrics. She was a member of the American Legion Post #16, A.A.R.P., Iwo Jima Survivors Association and the Navy Nurse Corp Association. She served during WWII with the U.S. Navy as a flight nurse in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. Norma was one of the first twelve Navy nurses to serve as flight nurses. She was responsible for evacuating casualties from Iwo Jima and Okinawa during the battles. She received a Unit Commendation.
She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn George Shoemaker of Washington Court House, Barbara Jack Vermillion of Ontario, Gweneth John Pirman of Syracuse, NY; four grandchildren, Julie Matthew Miller of Pittsburgh, PA, Jonathan Shoemaker of Chicago, Ryan Vermillion and Christine Vermillion, both of Ontario; two great-grandchildren; brother, John Harrison of Palo Alto, CA; sister-in-law, Margaret Harrison of Mansfield; and special friend, Elizabeth 'Betty' Maul of Mansfield. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kevin Crotty in 1978, parents, brother, Richard Harrison and sister-in-law, Ruth Harrison.
Funeral services will be held Friday, February 9 at 11:00 a.m. at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors. Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Military graveside services conducted by Richland County Joint Veteran's Burial Detail will follow in Mansfield Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are made to St. Peter's Catholic Schools.
