

Richard F. 'Frank' Spangler died Tuesday, October 22, 2002 at Med Central Hospital. Mr. Spangler was born June 24, 1919 in Crestline, Ohio to Adam and Tillie Spangler. He graduated from Crestline High School in 1937 and from the National Diesel School in Los Angeles in 1938. He worked for the government War Department's Military Railroad Division at Ft. Belvoir, Virginia and was sent overseas to Suez to join the British 8th Army in the Sahara Desert and defeat General Rommel. After returning from Africa he was sent to Mifflin, Ohio to open a specialized training school for Cadets. After the war ended Mr. Spangler joined Westinghouse in the Service Department and was sent to Seattle, Washington in 1949 as District Service Manager for Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Alaska. After 4 years he was transferred back to Mansfield and promoted to marketing and retired in 1981 as Vice President of Marketing with worldwide responsibilities. Mr. Spangler was a past president and 30 year member of the Mansfield Men's Garden Club. He organized, founded and was past president of the BCB Angler's Club. He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church where he married his wife in 1944.
He leaves behind his wife of 58 years, Jeanne Spangler, two daughters Jayne Haverfield and Susan Coyle and husband Kevin, sister Ruth Schiffer and husband Robert, sister Jeanne Owen and husband Bill, grandchildren Kristin Blum, Kerri Leininger, Brian Spangler-Campbell, Whitney Haverfield, and Donna Durham, and great-grandchildren Kori and McKenzie Blum, and Regan and Ryan Durham. He was preceded in death by his son Rick Spangler, his parents, and his sisters Rosemary Thrush, Mildred Schanz and Eloise Swank.
Friends may call at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 South Lexington-Springmill Rd. on Thursday October 24, 2002 from 6-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home conducted by Father John Jorden. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery of Crestline. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mansfield Men's Garden Club or Grace Episcopal Church Memorial Fund.
