Robert L. Guerin, 87, died peacefully at his home, Thursday, February 22, 2018 surrounded by the family he loved so much. He was born October 7, 1930 in Shelby, Ohio, to Charles A. Guerin and Josephine Wanamaker Guerin Pifer.
Working as an airplane mechanic, he enlisted as an air guardsman with the 164th Fighting Squadron of which he was a charter member. He continued in the service of his country with the 179th Tactical Airlift Group of Mansfield Lahm Airport. Dedicated to duty throughout his career, he received multiple Superior Performance awards. As an Organizational Maintenance Supervisor and Chief Master Sergeant, he retired October 5, 1985, receiving the Air Force Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service.
With time now to travel, he and Rosine wintered in Florida and shared in new friendships there. He enjoyed woodworking, creating furniture as lasting gifts for his daughters and grandchildren. He was known as "Uncle Bob" to many, and "Grandpa" to not only family but anyone in need of a loving hug. His years of battling leukemia were not known to many. He never complained, but chose to be a father to the fatherless, a mentor, and a true and constant friend. Always ready with his wit and humor, his "Bob-ism" quotes will be remembered with a smile the rest of our lives. He truly enjoyed nurturing plants, watching them grow in the same way he nurtured so many of us. Watching us grow, hopefully, into caring people like he was, and learning from him the way of a life lived with integrity, brought Bob great pleasure.
He is survived by his wife, Rosine (Dickson) Guerin, the love of his life for 68 years. His selfless devotion to his "Rosie" was unconditional. He is also survived by a sister, Linda (John) Pifer Pollock of Land of Lakes, FL; two daughters, Kim (Milo) Breitinger and Nancy (Dane) Seitz of Mansfield, Ohio; two grandchildren, Cara Breitinger and Brian (Amy) Breitinger; two great-grandchildren, Ayden and Olivia Breitinger; and many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Richard Guerin.
The family will receive friends from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Thursday, March 1, 2018, at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 98 S. Diamond St., Mansfield. The funeral service will be held Friday at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home with Rev. Robert Stull officiating. Additional visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. Friday. Burial will follow in Windsor Park Cemetery with military honors provided by the 179th Airlift Wing Base Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 1592 Grace St., Mansfield, OH 44905.
