Robert E. Hughes, 90, passed away Saturday, April 18, 2026, in Mansfield, OH surrounded by family. Bob was born in 1936 in Franklin Furnace, Ohio to Lewis and Mary Elizabeth (Gallian) Hughes. He graduated from Green High School in 1954 and enlisted in the US Navy Reserves and served on the USS Earl K. Olsen D.E.
He later entered a career at the General Motors plant in Mansfield, OH in 1957 where he held roles including Superintendent of Quality Control. Bob married Jewell (Akers) Hughes in 1958 and made their home in Mansfield.
The couple later built a second home in The Villages, FL near life-long friends and created amazing memories for 25 years playing golf, riding their golf cart around town, and sharing special vacations with their family each year. Bob and Jewell enjoyed traveling, including trips in their motorhome and more cruises than they could count.
He is survived by two daughters, Kim (Doug) Miers of Ontario, OH and Lisa (Ralph) Moore of Port Clinton, OH; two grandsons, Brock Moore (Alison Keane-Moore) and Brandon Moore (Hayley Drlik) both of Cleveland; sister-in-law, Bonnie Cunningham; and nieces and nephews Tony Cunningham, Dawn Cunningham, Patty Hughes Curtis and Greg Hughes.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded by his wife of 64 years; a sister, Rosanne Arthur; and a brother, Leonard Hughes.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, April 25, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Wappner Funeral Directors-Mansfield, 98 S. Diamond Street, Mansfield, Ohio where a service conducted by Chaplain Jill Waite will begin at 3:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mayflower Congregational Church.
