She was born August 3, 1941, in Lorain, Ohio, to William R. and Eleanor M. Long, and she graduated from Madison High School in Mansfield in 1959. Shirley had a curious mind and a generous heart, which led her to pursue a career in nursing. After graduating from the Fairview Park Hospital School of Nursing in Cleveland, she worked at People's Hospital in Mansfield, Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus and McLaren General Hospital in Flint, Michigan. Upon returning to Ohio in 1972, she worked in the maternity services department at Mansfield General Hospital. She worked as a surgical nurse at People's Hospital from 1984 to 1986 before returning to Mansfield General. She retired as a surgical nurse from MedCentral Health System in 2006.
Shirley attended St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Bucyrus, where her husband is director of music ministries. Music was an important part of her life; in addition to being a skilled accordion player, she was active in her church choir and was a past member of the Mansfield Symphony Chorus. She was also a member of the Ohio Genealogical Society, was an active member and supporter of the National Rifle Association and enjoyed bingo, scrapbooking and Ohio State football. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandsons.

Long of Mansfield; a son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Kristin Hunt of Delaware, Ohio; a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Michael Householder of Ashland, Ohio; and four grandsons, Sean and Kevin Hunt of Delaware and Andrew and Justin Householder of Ashland.
