
Steve Cohen Chitwood, 81, of Mansfield, died Monday October 13, 2003 at Winchester Terrace following an extended illness. Mr. Chitwood was born October 23, 1921 in Banks County, Georgia, residing in the Mansfield area since 1951. He retired from the United States Postal Service and was a veteran of the United States Coast Guard serving from 1942 to 1945. Mr. Chitwood was a member of First United Methodist Church. Steve liked to travel; he headed up travel plans for the TYTQ group at his church; reading, watching sports and spending time with his family and friends.
Surviving are his wife, Ruth Mains Chitwood of Mansfield; four children, Betterae Hunt of Lexington; Stephanie Wilbanks of Dayton, Ohio; Steve A. Chitwood of Lucas; and Cheryl and her spouse, Gary Van Riper of Columbia, Missouri; nine grandchildren, Alexis Hunt; Carla Hunt; Ross Wilbanks; Matt Wilbanks; Shawn and his spouse, Rae Chitwood; Lt. Neil and his spouse Megan Chitwood; Craig Chitwood; Justin Van Riper and Allison Van Riper; two great grandchildren, Kevin Cuthbertson and Isaac Chitwood; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Charles and Judy Chitwood; Virlyn and Emily Chitwood; James and Bonnie Chitwood; and Kenneth and Pat Chitwood; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Dorothy Caudell; and Joyce and Boots Hill all of Georgia. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fort and Neatie Norton Chitwood; one sister, Francine McDonald; and one brother, Clifford Chitwood.
Friends may call one hour prior to memorial services, which will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Charles Tobias. Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church or to North Central Ohio Hospice.
