I am sorry to hear about Steve’s passing.

Although I was familiar with Steve from working retail in Shelby, it wasn’t until I worked at Lakeside Books that I had a chance to actually know him. We were generally paired up together on jobs, especially when sent to other departments. Despite only working with him for two years, I really got to know him over that brief period.

If you knew nothing else about Steve, you knew truck driving was a large part of his life. No matter who he talked to, he would inevitably tell them stories of his life on the road. Whether it was driving to Snow Shoe, Pennsylvania in white-out conditions or picking up loads of Morton salt in New York, he had plenty to tell. When Smokey and the Bandit was eventually brought up in one of our conversations, Steve made a point of explaining how a trailer full of Coors wouldn’t have survived the trip to Atlanta with Jerry Reed’s driving.

Local history was another topic Steve was fond of. As both of us lived in the same area, there were always old buildings and long gone businesses for us to discuss. Mansfield’s manufacturing, in particular, was something he was very knowledgeable about. I remember him telling me about his uncle who was instrumental in designing Tappan’s first microwave for home-use.

I’ll miss Steve’s atlas-like recall of just about every road east of the Mississippi, talking about our dogs, and just having conversations with him, altogether.

I am so sorry to hear about Steve's passing. Steve and I went to Grant Street School together in the mid-70s. My biggest memory of Steve is he loved 18 wheeler big rigs. We both liked trucks when we were young. He wanted to be a trucker when he grew up. We talked about starting S & P Trucking (Steve & Paul). 🤣 I remember going over to his house and he would show me all the 1/25 scale model kits he built of Kenworth and Mack trucks. He was very proud of them! Steve and his family moved away one day and we fell out of touch. Then one day we reconnected. He showed up at my house, out of the blue, years later when we were both out of high school. He was a truck driver. I was in college. He was living his dream! Then, I never saw him again. However, I will never forget the childhood memories that we shared and his big rig models.

So saddened to hear about this. I had the pleasure of working alongside of Steve during his time at LSC. Over the past year or so, Steve finally started to open up to a select few of us. Going from a stubborn old man, who was pretty quiet, but would tell you like it was. To an extremely talkative, kind one. He loved talking about his FedEx days, and all about semi trucks from the time he clocked in, to the time we clocked out (10 hours later). As well as his dog.  Probably the ONLY person I would listen to about a single subject for that amount of time. I knew, if they were going to send Steve back to my line to work, my day wasn’t going to be a boring one. I’m going to miss our 10 hour talks, and having him follow me around as I worked on my machine, making sure what ever memory he was talking to me about was heard. Gonna miss him a lot.

I wanted to send condolences to Steve's family. When he came to Lakeside Book, he quickly became part of r Hi Tech family I r department. He was good to work with and had a good sense of humor. He'll be missed by everyone.

I grew up and went to school with Steve,  pretty much the only friend I had. Kept in touch for awhile as we both drove truck. Lost track of him after awhile. Steve was an wonderful friend.  Thoughts an prayers go out to his family. Just sad how time slips away from us all...
