Theodore "Ted" E. Selby, 82, passed away Wednesday evening, December 12, 2018, at OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital. He was born July 16, 1936, in Mansfield, Ohio, to the late John Raymond and Elsie Mae (Anliker) Selby.
He graduated from Mansfield Senior High School in 1954 and attended Ashland University. On September 8, 1962, he was blessed in marriage to Martha Gfrer and they began an unforgettable adventure. Ted served in the Air National Guard and worked at the U.S. Post Office. He then went to work for the Mansfield Police Department for 14 years where he earned the rank of Sergeant. His last place of employment was at AK Steel where he worked as a guard. Ted then retired to enjoy the pleasures of life and satisfy his desire to tinker with various projects.
Ted loved golfing, outdoor activities, especially horseshoes and corn hole, or any card game known to man. He kept in excellent physical condition by swimming at the Mansfield Y. His adventurous spirit took him to California where he lived for a bit and learned to scuba dive. He took every opportunity to travel and, after his retirement, he became a "snow bird", escaping Ohio's winters for the sun and surf of Florida. Ted enjoyed theatrics and "hamming it up" over the years. He was very artistic and loved drawing, delighting his grandchildren with his creativeness. Ted played numerous musical instruments and could play the piano by ear. The unique and remarkable abilities he possessed will be treasured in the memories of his family.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 56 glorious years, Martha Selby; three children, Diane Stewart, Steven Selby, and Michael Selby; four grandchildren, Autumn Selby, Jacob Stewart, Caleb Stewart and Logan Stewart; a sister, Kay Ellen (Monte) Voelp; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Lela Sheets.
The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 18, 2018, at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington-Springmill Rd. The funeral service conducted by Rev. Gregory Bibler will be held in the funeral home on Wednesday, December 19, 2018 at 1:30 p.m. with additional visitation beginning at 12:30 p.m. He will be laid to rest in Mansfield Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to First Christian Church.
