
William Earl Hoffman of Mansfield died November 12, 2009 at MedCentral Hospital. He was born May 19, 1925 in Mansfield to Wilbur Earl and Elizabeth Sauder Hoffman, both deceased. He was a lifelong resident of Mansfield. He attended Mansfield Senior High School and was a World War II Veteran with the U.S. Army. He served in the European-African-Middle Eastern-Campaign. He received four Bronze Service Stars, Good Conduct Medal, and American Theatre Ribbon; served in the American Theatre and received the Purple Heart for valor; participated in the D-Day landing at Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. He also served in the Belgian Campaign and received the Fleur-de-lis. He retired August 31, 1990 after 31 years with General Motors. He was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church where he served on Church Council and as head usher. Also, a member of International Radio Patrol, AMVETS Post #26, V.F.W. Post #5101, and a life member of D.A.V. #21. Bill was a Boy Scout leader for many years, liked to travel and roller skate, and was active in the local Democratic Party, and motorcycle enthusiast.
He is survived by his wife, Naomi Carter Hoffman, whom he married July 10, 1987; one son and daughter-in-law, Larry Eugene and Sandra Hoffman of Columbus; granddaughter, Heather Hoffman-Ordonez; and two great granddaughters, Elisa Dale and Anya Ordonez, all of Columbus; brother, Harold Hoffman of Ontario; sister-in-law, Ethel Hoffman of Lexington; two step daughters and step son-in-laws, Lorie and Gene King of Boring, OR and Jill and Gary Knight of Ontario; step son and step daughter-in-law, Alan and Ginger Kochheiser of Delaware; six step grandchildren; five step great grandchildren; brother-in-law, Ervin Carol Anne Myers of Mansfield; nephew, Robin Mary Myers; nieces, Shawna Ray, Mona Robin Ujoodha, Alison Dale Miller, and Susanne Timothy Carmack; and numerous grandnieces and grandnephews. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Nanceita Myers Hoffman on September 29, 1986; granddaughter, Tracy Jo Hoffman in 1993; and brother, Russell Hoffman in 2009.
Friends may call Friday, November 20, 2009 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the Diamond St. Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 98 S. Diamond St., Mansfield. Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 21, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 541 Springmill St., Mansfield, conducted by Rev. Carl W. Cunfer and Rev. Jon Steingass. Military graveside services will be conducted by the Richland County Joint Veteran's Burial Detail in Lantz Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mark's Lutheran Church or MedCentral Hospice.
