Jo was born December 16, 1939, in Rensselaer, Indiana, to Elmer and Pauline Kauffman. She lived a life defined by quiet kindness, steady grace, and deep devotion to her family — the people and moments she treasured most.
She is lovingly remembered by her children: Tracy (Tim) Foltz of Tucson, Arizona; Steve (Angela) Hays of Akron, Ohio; and Dewey (Marilyn) Hays of Fancy Prairie, Illinois; along with 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Jeanette Reimer.
Jo spent many years working for the State of Illinois before retiring. Outside of work, she found joy in life’s simple pleasures — especially time spent with family, which she considered her favorite pastime. She also cherished the friendships and fun she shared line dancing with her club at Prairieland in Illiopolis, Illinois, before later making Arizona her home.
Those who knew Jo will remember her gentle spirit, her quiet demeanor, and the kindness she carried into every interaction. She never sought attention, yet she left a lasting impression through warmth, patience, and love.
There will be no formal service. Instead, her family will celebrate her memory privately and carry her presence forward in their hearts.
In honor of Jo’s life and legacy, memorial contributions may be made through planting a tree via the Arbor Day Foundation — a living tribute that grows and gives back to the world she cared for.
