“Thou hast joined that precious river to the mighty sea, Thou hast returned that spreading ray of light to the Sun of Truth.” ‘Abdu’l-Baha
Darrel “Dash” George Crofts was born on August 14, 1938, to Mary French Crofts and Sutton Philip Crofts in Cisco Texas. He completed his journey to his Creator at 9:59 AM on Tuesday, March 25, 2026, in Austin Texas. He was 87 years old.
Beloved husband, father, world-renowned musician and singer, and dedicated servant of the Bahá’í Faith he was best known to the world as one-half of the iconic musical duo Seals & Crofts. Dash’s mandolin phrasing and soaring harmonies helped to define an era of American music. Alongside his longtime musical partner, the late Jim Seals, Dash voiced hits that became cultural touchstones, including Summer Breeze, Diamond Girl, and Get Closer.
Yet, to Dash, his celebrity was secondary to his life as a teacher of the Bahá’í Faith. He viewed his music as a humble vehicle for the teachings of Bahá’u’lláh. He and Jimmy always stayed long after the final encore to sit with fans and share their perspective on the oneness of humanity, the peace of God, and the spiritual destiny of the soul. The beauty and meaning of his music were not merely performances; they were expressions of a heart deeply suffused with divine love.
To his family, Dash was a man of extraordinary gentleness. He was intensely sensitive to the suffering of others, endeavoring never to hurt a heart. Towards the end of his life his family recalled how hard it was for him to permit even an insect to suffer in his presence.
He saw the best in everyone he met, filling easily with pride and admiration for his friends and family. To know Dash was to be accepted deeply and without condition. He moved through this world with a grace that suggested he was already partially attuned to the next.
Dash is survived by his devoted wife, Louise Crofts, his twin sister Dorothy (Dot) Mittel and a family who carries his spirit of kindness forward: his children and their spouses: Lua Crofts Faragher (Scott); Faizi Crofts (Sunray); Amelia Crofts Starkweather (Joseph); Joseph Crutcher (Lara); Jaime Lerma (Jeremiah), his grandchildren: Aneece; Ava; Charlotte; Ethan (Sojourner); Eli; Marcella; Lily; Cloe; Saylor and his many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his musical brother and dear friend, Jim Seals.
The family will hold a private funeral service in accordance with Bahá’í traditions. The Highland Lakes Honor Guard will perform Military Funeral Honors for his services in the United States Army.
In his memory, the family suggests reflecting on the words of the Bahá’í writings which Dash so loved: "Soar into the atmosphere of the love of God... and be a means of guidance unto the people."
