David was born in Orange, Texas to Bobbie Rae (White) and Joseph Daniel Greenwell. He considered Florence, Kentucky his hometown and has many, many Greenwell relatives in the Kentucky area.
After graduating from Boone County High School in Florence, KY, David headed to Texas where he attended junior college before transferring to Texas A&M University in College Station. He worked his way through college as a busboy and waiter at Red Lobster and Bennigans. He loved those years and jobs and always told his family that in his later years he would love to do that type of work again. After graduating from A&M with a degree in biomedical science, he knew he wanted to go to veterinary school or medical school. He always said it was difficult to get in to vet school so he settled for medical school.
He packed the car and headed for Galveston where he began medical school at University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. He belonged to a service fraternity, Phi Chi, where he made a tremendous number of friendships and memories. After graduating medical school David was excited to learn he matched with the urology residency program at UTMB and would get to stay in Galveston for six more years. While in Galveston he could often be found wade fishing any time he had a spare hour. His love of fishing was life long.
At the end of his first year of residency, the Urology Department gained a new secretary and in a few short weeks David, a new girlfriend. David proposed to Jennifer four months later, they were married in Galveston in 1995. In 1996 Leah Payton Greenwell was welcomed to the island and in 1999 along came Mason Hunter Greenwell. David loved being a father and loved his children immensely. He completed his urology residency in 2000 and relocated the family to Marble Falls.
David opened his own practice, Highland Lakes Urology, in August of 2000. He became well known over the years to staff at Llano Memorial Hospital, Seton (Ascension) in Burnet, and the Highland Lakes Surgery Center in Marble Falls. He loved his patients and always enjoyed learning about their hobbies and careers. He ended every patient visit with a “God bless you.”
David was completely invested in Boy Scout Troop 284 and served for years as Mason went from Webelo to Eagle Scout. He was a proud Eagle Scout father. David loved singing and dancing and these are often what he shared with Leah. He reveled in his daddy-daughter dates and dances and loved to sing a few select songs to -and with- Leah throughout her early years. He even performed at halftime with Leah for the senior Starlette parent dance. A cut-up on the dance floor, he always threatened to bust out his “signature” dance move the dying cockroach any time a dance floor was nearby. He did once and had to have assistance getting up, thankfully it was retired after that. Once David and Jennifer became empty nesters they enjoyed taking many cruises with friends.
David was a friend to all and knew no strangers. He formed deep, lasting friendships through his sixty-three years. David was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Daniel Greenwell, and mother, Bobbie Rae White. He leaves behind: wife, Jennifer; daughter Leah and son-in-law Andrew Garcia; son Mason Greenwell; and granddaughter, Parker Leigh Garcia, and soon-to-be granddaughter Ella Payton Garcia. David was fortunate to have John Kirby Allen IV and Susan Davidson Allen as his in-laws, and brother-in-law, John Kirby “Jay” Allen V. David also leaves behind his brothers and sisters-in-law, and nieces and nephews whom he loved so much: Tom and Cheryl Greenwell, and nephew Joe, and niece Melissa; Matt and Anita Greenwell, nephew Ben, and niece Kate. David had many dear cousins from both the Greenwell and White families that were very special to him and of course Jackie Dowell, his nurse of over twenty years, was his chosen family member.
A celebration of life will take place Wednesday, June 10, 2026 at 2 p.m. at First Methodist Church of Marble Falls at 1101 Bluebonnet Drive, Marble Falls (near H-E-B) where David was a member for 26 years. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to First Methodist Church of Marble Falls in his honor.
