Duke Wayne Weidmann, 68, passed away Monday, December 7, 2020, from a sudden heart attack at his home in Spicewood, Texas.
Duke was born September 9, 1952, in Dallas, Texas to Fred and Pauline Weidmann.
Duke grew up in Lubbock, Texas enjoying baseball, hot-rod cars, girls, and golden gloves boxing. Honing his skills as a young draftsman sparked a lifelong interest in functional design and art.
He met the love of his life, Monica Ross, while living in Lubbock. Six months later, on June 22, 1976, they were married at St. Bishop's Cathedral in Providence, Rhode Island.
Duke and Monica moved to Austin in 1978 and created Affiliated Reporters & Video in 1983, providing court reporting and video deposition services in the Austin area and internationally. They operated the business with compassion and integrity. Co-workers felt like family. In 1985, Affiliated Reporters was the first in Texas to offer Computer-Aided Transcription which enabled a deaf attorney to participate in live court.
Outside the courtroom, Duke loved singing over Monica’s shoulder as she played piano. He particularly enjoyed videoing the lead pianist for A. Mozart Fest in Austin as well as dancing, skiing on Lake Travis, and Cowboy Action Shooting.
After retiring and selling the business in 2005, Duke developed his artistic sensibilities through course work at various art institutions. He developed an extensive portfolio that included fine jewelry, iron sculpture, woodwork, and painting.
Duke was kind, generous, impish, fun-loving, and a defender of the underdog. He was an advisor and mentor to employees, colleagues, and family throughout his years. Duke’s razor-sharp wit and loving nature will be forever remembered and sorely missed.
Duke is survived by his wife, Monica, and his three brothers, Fred (Cheryl) Weidmann, Ron (Carol) Weidmann, Eric (Kim) Weidmann; 3 nephews, 5 nieces, 5 grand-nephews, and 4 grand-nieces.
