Jeanne McNelis was born on October 6, 1931 to Lee Roy and Lela Thompson in Lenapah, Oklahoma. She passed away July 6, 2025 at the age of 93. Jeanne was a wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a teaching degree and taught high school English until she became a mother which was the profession she loved best.
She met the love of her life Les McNelis when she was only 14 years old, married in college and they spent over 50 years together until his death in 2005. She is also preceded in death by her oldest son, Kevin McNelis.
Jeanne is survived by her sons and their wives Sean (Barbara) and Darin (Cheryl). In addition, Jeanne was a grandmother and great grandmother affectionately known as Nanu to her grandchildren PB (Liz), Brian (Carly), Kayleigh (Will), Bryce (Jordan), Megan, Colin (Christina) and great grandchildren Mallory, Alden, Jordan, Walker and Wells.
Jeanne loved spending time with her children and they spent many camping trips together as a family. She celebrated her Cherokee heritage and loved making intricate replica dolls of various Indian tribes. She sewed beautiful blankets for all of her grandchildren which were cherished and used by her great grandchildren as well. Jeanne was also a great cook and gifted her daughter-in-laws her favorite recipes typed on index cards in a box when they were married.. which they still have and use. Her breakfast casserole was award winning as were her pie crusts.
Jeanne was a proud Sooner much to the chagrin of her children and grandchildren who were Longhorns. Each year she wanted to watch the game with us but it is hard to cheer for the Sooners. She even attended a Sooner reunion in Norman with some friends from Georgetown and had a great time.
We would also like to thank the wonderful staff at the Arbor House memory care where Jeanne lived the past year. Their compassion, empathy and love was most appreciated and they were like her second family.
While we are saddened with our mom’s passing but we know she had a long life well lived and well loved.
