John Eugene Mead and his 84 years of life on earth ended, and his heavenly life began on February 22, 2022. John was born in Houston, Texas on January 4, 1938 to John and Violet Mead. After graduating high school in 1956 John left Houston to serve in the United State Air Force, where he met Monette Sawyer on a blind date. After a 3rd date marriage proposal and a six-month engagement, they married on March 3, 1960. The newlyweds initially settled in Houston, where over the following ten years they had their four children, Mark, Robin, Lori and Joel. Their mutual desire of the country life brought them back to Monette’s hometown of Spicewood in 1970. They quickly became active members of both Spicewood and Marble Falls communities. In addition to starting the first hearing aid service center in Marble Falls, he volunteered with the Spicewood Fire Department, was a mason at Henry Thomas masonic lodge, was a trustee on the Marble Falls ISD school board and served for 12 years as Burnet County Commissioner Precinct 4. John also owned and operated Highland Lakes Propane, before returning to public service with the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission for 13 years before retirement. Throughout John’s life he served on many boards and committees trying to improve the communities he loved. However, probably the most rewarding role John had was playing Santa Claus. He and “Mrs. Clause (Monette), would deliver homemade rolls and sweet treats to their various doctors, their bank staff, to friends and family, but especially loved the opportunity to visit CASA, children in hospitals, and the Spicewood Fire Department.
John is preceded in death by his wife of almost 60 years, Monette, his parents John and Violet Mead, his sisters, Linda Hartman and Sharon Bradley. He is survived by his children Mark Mead, Robin Garmon and husband Bull, Lori Mead, Joel Mead and wife Debbie, grandchildren Kyle Cummings, Jolie Mead and Seth Mead and bonus grandson Edward Diaz; beloved cousin/brother Luther Mead and wife Sally, many nieces, nephews and extended family.
The family wants to thank John’s loving doctors and staff at Parson’s House and Gateway Gardens for their amazing assistance and especially the God-sent staff from Tiffin House who provided John the most safe and loving end-of-life care.
Funeral services will be held at the Fellowship Baptist Church in Marble Falls on March 5, 2022. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by the service at 11 a.m. The congregation will host a lunch immediately following the service to allow additional time for fellowship. A brief graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. at Haynie Flatt Cemetery in Spicewood, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, consider donations to CASA of Marble Falls or Spicewood Fire Department.
