Katie was born October 22, 1951 in Springfield, Illinois. Her early years were spent in East Aurora, New York, Shorewood, WI, and Evanston, Il. She attended Marquette University where she met Ron Lenss who became her husband of 52 years. They married in 1971 and moved to San Antonio Texas, their adopted home and retired to Horseshoe Bay in 2020.
Katie graduated from nursing school from University of Texas Health Science Center in 1974 and began a 14-year career in nursing, primarily working in cardiology with Dr. Gerald Koppes. In 1995, she transitioned to a 20-year career in personal insurance at Frost Insurance Agency and then Chubb Insurance Co.
Katie was active in many philanthropic and community activities. She volunteered extensively at the San Antonio Food Bank and became a board member and eventually board chair in 2014. An accomplished pianist, the highlight of her lifelong love of the piano was an opportunity to perform onstage with Liberace at a concert in 1985.
Katie will be remembered as a talented athlete who loved tennis and golf. She and Ron traveled the world playing the most challenging courses from Pebble Beach to Royal County Downs. Katie often partnered with her sons in tennis and golf tournaments and in fact won a statewide mixed doubles tournament with her son, Nathan in 2000 over several much younger players.
A consummate hostess, Katie enjoyed entertaining in her home. Katie's favorite times were those spent with family and her many close friends. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were her greatest joy.
Since 2017, Katie has fought a valiant battle with ALS. Leading a team called “Katie’s Warriors” she raised significant funds for the ALS Association of Texas with her close friends help and financial support.
