Nina met her husband, Jerry, in school at the ages of 14 and 18. He played quarterback for the high school football team and she sat on the school sidewalk to watch his team practice. He owned one of only three cars driven by students at his High School. Knowing this, Nina and her friend schemed to borrower/steal his car as a way to get his attention. Neither girl knew how to drive and fortunately, the car ran out of gas within a few blocks. That was the beginning of their romance and their story began. They eloped a year later on July 23, 1948 and became Mr. and Mrs. at the ages of 15 and 19. Jerry and Nina celebrated 61 years of marriage at the year of Jerry's passing in 2010.
As one might imagine, this legacy continues with her four children: Judy (Donnie) Ketchens, Kathie (Bob) Surma-Helgren, Jerry Fryer Jr. and Roy (Sharyn) Fryer, 9 grandchildren, 26 great grands and 3 great greatgrands!
Nina's passion for life was prayer, helping and giving to those in need, and sharing her love for Christ with others. She found much joy in being with her family and playing games into the late hours of the night. She was the queen of the board game, Aggravation. Never a boring moment with her horses to enjoy and her endless artistic and creative projects.
She was motivated in life; a woman of prayer and unwavering faith and trust in Christ. Family and friends often received cards and letters with handwritten scriptures all over the outside of the envelopes as her goal was to also touch the hearts of "mail carriers".
Her adventure for life was seen through her sense of humor with laughter, smiles, and fun as she consistently did practical jokes and tricks within the family. Nina lived life as a caring and strong mother. She taught her family the values of being motivated to work hard, learning, listening and be an independent thinker. She was brilliant beyond her years and formal education.
The love, compassion, and selflessness that Nina gave will stay with us forever. We will miss her every day! She has left us treasured memories and taught us how to live a fulfilled and joyful life. You are forever in our hearts.
