A longtime resident of Meadowlakes and Austin, TX, Rosalyn (Roz) Ialee Grimm Hill, died January 25, 2025, in hospice care at her home in Meadowlakes, TX. She was born in Celina, Ohio, on January 4, 1928, to Otto Albert and Melva Mae Grimm. A woman of immense compassion and light spirit, quick to laughter and slow to anger, she spent her early years growing up in a small town/rural central Ohio where her father was in construction and plumbing in Celina. Roz had an active life spent with her family, helping to care for her three younger brothers, her grandparents Kincaid on their farm, and her grandparents Grimm in town during the Depression of the 1930s. Roz loved to tell stories of collecting cookies from her grandmother after school, watching farm animals being born, sleeping on a straw and goose feather mattress in a loft at the farm, and attending part of her high school in Happy Valley/Oakridge, Tennessee where her father, grandfather, and uncle worked on the Manhattan Project which produced materials for the first atom bomb. She then attended the Miami Valley Hospital School of Nursing, Ohio, and graduated in 1949. She worked as a floor nurse and surgical nurse in Celina and had wonderful stories about the various surgeons and their antics in the community. She was also assigned to manage the various oxygen and respiratory care equipment and was sent to a school for this in Chicago – one of the very first Inhalation Therapy schools in the country. There, she met the love of her life – Milton Fly Hill. They were married and moved to Oklahoma City, OK, and then to Austin, Texas. In Austin, she worked as a Registered Nurse at Breckenridge Hospital and The University of Texas Student Health Center. After she retired from nursing and the death of her spouse, she moved to Marble Falls, Texas, to be near her oldest daughter, Jan. There, she continued her active life reading to elementary school children and participating in the quilting club that produced wonderful quilts for wounded service men and women all over the world. She was also a mean cribbage player – she honed her skills over many years playing with her husband and would whip you and laugh about even in her final hours.
Roz was beloved by her children and grandchildren, who often spent summers and holidays with her, creating memories that would last a lifetime. Whether it was listening to her stories while drinking tea, playing board games late into the night, or learning life lessons from her wisdom and compassion, Roz’s home was a sanctuary of love, laughter, and warmth for her family. She was the heart of family gatherings and brought immense joy to those around her.
During her life in Oklahoma and Texas, she managed her nursing career and had four children, all of whom survive her: Kevin Fly Hill (LuAnn), Jan Alice Morris (Tom), Douglas Hill (Alexis), and Dana Diane Williams (Patrick). There are 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one sister-in-law, Lynn Grimm.
A Celebration of Life is being scheduled and will be announced.
