Sammie Sue Miller Marrs died in Marble Falls, Texas, on July 10, 2025. She was preceded in death by husband of 74 years John Wayne Marrs in March 2022, and a sister, Lillian Walker. She is survived by three children: son Terrell Marrs and wife Sherri, daughter Carla Hester and husband Jim, and son John Mark Marrs and wife Patricia. She had 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren, and host of cousins, nieces and nephews, and friends.
Sammie Sue Miller Marrs was born on May 12, 1929, in Coleman, Texas, to Samuel Buckingham Miller and Eleanor Brooks. After her father’s death when she was six, she lived much of the time with her maternal grandmother, Hannah Elizabeth Brooks, and sometimes on the Leaday Ranch with her paternal grandparents, William Addison (Billy) and Lillian Mary Miller.
Sammie Sue attended Coleman schools and graduated from Coleman High School in 1946. She attended Seton Main Nursing School in Austin, leaving after a short time because of severe asthma. She returned to Coleman and married John Wayne Marrs on August 14, 1947. They lived in Coleman, Crane, and Marble Falls during their marriage.
Sammie Sue returned to nursing school in 1965 and became an RN. She worked at Crane Memorial Hospital, Odessa Women and Children’s Hospital in Odessa, as a public health nurse for the State of Texas, and as director of nursing at Rankin County Hospital District until her retirement. Her favorite area of nursing was obstetrics, and there are dozens of West Texas and Concho Valley residents whose birth certificates bear her name. Her dedication to nursing inspired a number of her children and grandchildren to enter medical-related fields. These include two CRNAs, an RN in school to become an NP, a dentist, and a representative for a medical device company.
Sammie Sue was active in Crane Christian Church as a Sunday school teacher and Vacation Bible school teacher. During the summer, she was a counselor and the camp nurse at Guadalupe Christian Camp in New Mexico. After moving to Marble Falls, she attended Lake Shores Church.
She loved reading and sewing and was a wonderful cook who maintained her interest in trying new recipes and cuisines until her 90s. She was a superlative Jeopardy player.
Sammie Sue was a beloved grandmother to 11 grandchildren, all of whom were able to spend quality time with their Nana and Papa. All of the 14 great grandchildren knew and loved Nana as well. Her 3 great great grandchildren live in Oklahoma and Wyoming.
A family burial is scheduled Wednesday, July 16, at 10:00 a.m. A memorial service for friends and family will be held on August 2, at Clements-Wilcox Funeral Home, 1805 Highway 281 N, Marble Falls, Texas, at 2:00 p.m.
