Sandra, known as Pickle by her father and Shatzie by her grandkids and all their friends and many others, was born on September 21, 1938, to parents, Bonnie and Cliffie Peiser. She grew up on a cotton farm at Veribest, Tx, She was the youngest of five children, having three older brothers and one older sister. She attended Byrd rural school and then Veribest-Byrd through the eighth grade. She then attended Edison Jr. High in San Angelo and Angelo High School. She graduated from high school in 1955 at the age of sixteen. She spent two years at San Angelo Jr. College and graduated from Sul Ross University in Alpine. She met her husband, Roy, there. After marriage on January 24th, 1959, she got her Master degree in Education. After Roy's graduation they moved to Marble Falls to teach and never left.
She loved being outdoors and spent much time with her daddy working outside. She loved driving the tractor home from the Mereta cotton gin. According to her she could not have had a more perfect childhood. As far as material things, they were dirt poor like most of their neighbors. However, the unconditional love from both parents more than made up for that and neither she nor her siblings ever lacked for anything they needed. Her mother sewed all their clothes and they outshone any store bought clothes. She loved to play “school” and went to college to become a teacher which she loved.
She always had a book or more that she was reading. She loved to read and write poetry. She also loved any kind of dancing. She took tap and ballet lessons as a child. She was always ready to dance which she did every time her grandsons were around.
She loved working and playing outdoors. She was often seen out chopping jumper cactus off the fence line or hauling dead limbs to the brush pile until cancer put a stop to that. She enjoyed hunting with the family for many years. She loved life. A childhood friend once told her mother that “Kaye's so happy her feet don't touch the ground”.
She loved her family fiercely: her two sons, Cord and Cody, and later three grandchildren, Thor, Zed, and Aspen, which she and husband, Roy, kept every chance they got. There have been more additions to the family in the last few years – a great granddaughter, Covey Jean and two great grandsons, Weston Roy and Gunnar Thor. All are treasured.
While teaching World History in high school at Marble Falls she had an opportunity to help take a group of students overseas. She was bitten by the travel bug and eventually visited many European, Asian, African, South American and Central American countries.
She self-published a book of poetry at the age of forty and twelve years later self-published her memoirs. After her last trip to Africa with Aspen, she had a book of her travels published. This, being her last travel adventure which she made alone, was the most exciting and rewarding of them all. Her two favorite sayings were “we may never pass this way again” and “this, too, shall pass”.
The past decade she has enjoyed a little bit of acting in commercials and doing background work in music videos and movies. Two of her favorites were “American Outlaws” which she did with her sister and “Bernie”.
Sandra came to Marble Falls in 1960, along with husband, Roy, to teach. After retiring from 28 years of teaching which included coaching girls' varsity basketball, volleyball and middle and high school tennis and many subjects and grades. She taught American History, World History, Sociology and Health in high school and P. E. in all grades. She then subbed in all four elementary schools for 29 years. Covid and cancer put an end to her subbing.
Sandra is preceded in death by husband, Roy, parents, Bonnie and Cliffie Peiser, brother, Cliff Peiser Jr. and sister Shirley Boatright. She always had a wonderful time at family reunions because her family loved to have fun.
She wanted to thank family and friends for the calls, cards and visits. Thanks to her niece, Amby Rice, who would come and get her to take her out for the day to eat, see the bluebonnets or just go for a drive and visited many times. A special thanks to the nurses from Texas Home Health who checked on her weekly. Thank you to Cody who drove her to many of her treatments. A special thanks goes to Cord who was with her every step of this journey and a wonderful caregiver. He is the only person besides her who knew how rough the journey was at times.
