

Dick was born December 14, 1925,and was raised in Lafayette, IN. After graduating from Jefferson High School in 1943, he joined the U. S. Navy where he served as an Aviation Cadet. After the war ended, he returned to Indiana and attended Purdue University, earning both his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science Degrees.
During his time at Purdue, he fell in love with and married Joan Kurtz, also of Lafayette, IN. They recently celebrated 63 years of marriage.
Dick’s business career began in Lafayette at the General Telephone Company. In 1956, shortly after their first son, Michael, was born, they moved to Elkhart, IN. There, Dick worked as Director of Personnel for Whitehall Laboratories. Their second son, Mark, was born in Elkhart.
In 1962, they moved to Rye, NY, where Dick took a position as Director of Labor Relations at American Home Products in New York City. He finished his business career by working 27 years at the Hertz Corporation, retiring as the Vice President of Labor Relations. While living in Rye, New York, their third son, Matthew, was born.
After retiring, Dick and Joan moved to Marco Island, FL and lived in a house that was designed by Dick.
He is survived by his adoring wife of 63 years, Joan. He is also survived by his sons, Michael, of Indianapolis, IN, Mark, of Peachtree City, GA, and Matthew, of Battle Ground, IN. He is survived by grandsons Phillip, Brian, and Andrew Metzger,his sister, Rosemary Walgreen and his brother, James Metzger.
A funeral Mass will be held at San Marco Catholic Church, Marco Island Florida on Saturday, November 5, 2011, at 10:30 a.m.
There will not be a visitation.
