Roger was born on September 12, 1945, in Detroit, Michigan. He shared his childhood home with his parents, Rose and Ben Blau, and his siblings Elaine, Eleanor and Larry. Roger raised his children in Southfield and Commerce Township.
In Roger’s academic and professional life, he exemplified dedication and discipline. After graduating from Oakland University in only two and a half years, he was awarded the National Science Foundation Fellowship for Research in Industrial Management from the University of Detroit.
He began his professional career at Michigan Bell where he quickly advanced and became the youngest district manager in the history of the company. Continuing to work in telecommunications, he finished his career as Vice President of Sales and Services for Ameritech.
Throughout his life, Roger’s passion was the water and boating. His greatest pleasure was sharing this with his family and friends. Starting with his cabin cruiser, “The Wicked Witch”, followed by achieving his dream of owning a home, affectionately called “The Cottage” on Commerce Lake, years of beautiful memories were made.
Upon retirement, his ultimate dream was achieved. He and Joanne found beautiful Marco Island where they made their home for twenty-seven years. Roger’s love of the water continued. He became a licensed charter captain and member of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary. He took great pride in his Coast Guard duties as it allowed him to express his love of country.
Roger was a man of faith and service, and a mentor to many. He served two terms as the President of The Jewish Congregation of Marco Island. He also served as the liaison for the Temple. During the summer season, he was honored to act as the lay rabbi.
To know Roger was to love him. He will be missed.
