Alice “Pui Ching” Wong was born on February 15, 1934 at home in Boston Chinatown to Shew Leung Wong and Ho Yee Lee Wong. She was the oldest child, with rambunctious brothers Russell, Arthur, and Jeffrey. Growing up, she lived in Boston MA, Washington DC, and Miami FL because her father had an import business. During her high school years, the family moved to Hong Kong, where she attended the Maryknoll School. While living there, Alice met and married Glen Hom. They eventually moved to Miami, and had two children, Michael and Carol.
Glen and Alice (along with many new Chinese immigrants) opened a grocery store in Miami’s Liberty City. They were all called Joe’s Markets and usually the entire family worked in the store. Their store was called Hom’s Market. Alice was the head cashier. They later opened a Convenient Food Mart in Hialeah FL. She had a variety of fun jobs along the way: cashier & bookkeeper at the family stores, and librarian in a Christian school. She was very involved with the Chinese Baptist Church of Miami, with the Women’s Missionary Union and the church library. Alice and Glen were active with the Chinese American Business Association.
Friendships were very important to Alice. She spoke happily on the phone, conversing in Chinese to her girlfriends. She knew how to play many card games, and taught mahjong to others. After moving to Marietta, GA in 1999, she was active at the East Cobb Senior Center and worked as a child care provider at the Cosmos Fitness Gym. Her hobbies included crocheting and reading. She enjoyed her many friendships at Merrill Gardens in Woodstock, GA, worshipping at Sandy Plains Baptist Church and attending Sunday School class.
Traveling all over the world gave Alice pleasure. Highlights include going to China, Israel, Russia, Alaska and Europe. She travelled with many family and friends. Cruises were a favorite activity.
2024 was a banner year for Alice, as she celebrated her 90th birthday! She was called by many names - loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, Miss Alice, and Aunt Alice. We are grateful to many friends and relatives who loved and cared for her throughout her entire life.
Alice is survived by son Michael (Nancy) Hom and grandchildren Stephanie (Jeff) Gardner, Stephen (Josephine) Hom, Selena (Casey) Langbehn, and Eric Hom. She is also survived by daughter Carol (Randy) Fong and grandchildren Bethany (Brian) Tse and Catherine Fong. Her 10 great grandchildren include Addison, James, and Reid Gardner; Victoria, Hugh, and Vera Hom; Luke and Owen Langbehn; Emi and Ellie Tse. She is predeceased by her husband Glen Hom.
On November 22, 2024, Alice passed peacefully from this life to her eternal home with Our Heavenly Father.
