Cathy passed away on September 5, 2017 following an extended struggle with Parkinson’s disease.
Cathy was born July 5, 1938 in Houston, Texas, the daughter of Rufus and Wilhelmina Evans. She was the second of five children. In her teen years, she often volunteered at St. Joseph’s hospital and graduated from South Park High School in Beaumont, Texas. She went on to earn her B.A. with a major in Spanish from Sam Houston State University. There, she earned recognition in Who’s Who of American Universities & Colleges for her academic excellence. She was an ROTC sweetheart and president of her sorority Zeta Tau Alpha. It was at Sam Houston where she met and married the love of her life, Joseph Peter Daugherty. Cathy and Joe married on December 26, 1959 at St. Anne Catholic Church, Beaumont, Texas.
Cathy is preceded in death by her parents, Rufus and Wilhelmina Evans; sister, Karlene Wheeler; daughter, Alison Bauer; and grandson, Chris Early. Survivors include Cathy’s husband, LTC Joseph Daugherty of Marietta; her living children: Joseph Daugherty, Jr. (spouse Jennifer) of Marietta; Coleen Hosack (spouse Rob) of Marietta; Susan Bragg (spouse Rich) of Orlando, Florida; Jean Leapley (spouse Robert) of Ponte Vedra, Florida, and Michael Daugherty (spouse Larissa) of Marietta; sixteen grandchildren: Whitney Lesnicki; Brian, Catherine, and Shannon Gerstner; Madison Daugherty; Madeline, Emma, and Robert Hosack; Payton and Delaney Brag; Garrett, Carson, and Sean Leapley; Isabella, Colum, and Evangeline Daugherty; her two great-grandchildren: Margaret and Emerson Linthicum; her living siblings: Jean Pittman, Mary Brown, and Patrick Evans and numerous nieces and nephews.
Cathy lived the life of a career army officer’s wife, travelling and living all over the country, including Oklahoma, Alabama, Texas, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Kansas, and Georgia. While in Hawaii, Cathy earned her master’s degree in Spanish and began her teaching career. In 1982, after moving to Georgia, she began a highly successful career spanning two decades selling real estate in Cobb County.
Cathy was actively involved in numerous ministries at St. Ann, including serving years on the pastoral council, founding the St. Ann Mission Club and serving as its president for ten years, teaching sacrament courses, serving as a lector and lay Eucharistic minister, serving as an extraordinary lay Eucharistic minister to the sick, singing in the choir, participating in the women’s guild and 55-plus group, serving as an OCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) sponsor and many other ministries and groups.
Following retirement, Cathy enjoyed hosting campsites for the National Park Service. She travelled extensively with Joe in their RV reaching 47 of the lower 48 states. She also enjoyed numerous trips abroad to England, Italy, Spain, France, and the Holy land.
She delighted in hosting family and social gatherings. She loved history, reading, walking, practicing her faith, cooking, decorating, travelling, and writing poetry. But her favorite role in life was being a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was an extraordinary nurturer and faithful servant of God. The manner in which she lived her life, including the way in which she endured her suffering in her final years, is a testament to her faith as a Christian and her strength as a person and her devotion as a mother and wife. We will miss her dearly.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to the St. Ann La Salette Mission Club, a ministry near and dear to Cathy’s heart. St. Ann Catholic Church, 4905 Roswell Road, Marietta, Georgia 30062.
