George G. Marchman, age 84, passed away on August 29, 2023. Being one of four children, Garland (as his parents called him), was born on January 17, 1939 in LaGrange, Georgia to the late George Marchman and Sally Yates. His family moved to Smyrna where his father worked at Lockheed. George followed suit and worked at Lockheed for more than forty years. He attended Campbell High School, and he enjoyed being a lifeguard during the summer months. Many of us revel in his ability to build and fly multiple airplanes and play musical instruments such as the clarinet, the banjo, and the saxophone. He also enjoyed water skiing on Lake Allatoona and dancing the evening away with his wife, Margie. George was a tenacious learner and a man of few words.
George earned his Bachelor of Business Administration from Georgia State University and was proud to hold the title as the local table tennis champion. He enjoyed fixing family cars at the GLERC, building racing box cars for the Boy Scouts, and volunteering his time to provide flights for young children who were interested in aviation. He proudly served in the United States Air Force and spent time in Okinawa, Japan while in the military.
On a hot summer day in Marietta, Georgia some of his favorite times were eating a ‘mater sandwich with a vine ripe tomato from the backyard or enjoying cornbread and buttermilk. His annual fly-ins and going to OshKosh was a favorite for him as well.
Later in life, he loved to spend most of his time ballroom dancing and attending annual Halloween parties with Margie, which once included him dressing up as Elvis Presley, one of his favorite singers. They also spent quality time traveling the world and sightseeing together. Their ventures took them to Italy, Ireland, Panama Canal, and Alaska among many others. George enjoyed music and played saxophone in the New Horizons Band. He was a kind and loving person who will be missed deeply.
Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Malcolm Marchman and sister, Gwen Ritzman.
George is survived by his wife, Margie; son, Randy (Beth), daughter, Kara (Terry); brother, Tony Marchman; grandchildren, Logan, Ariel, and Katie; stepdaughter, Deborah (Joern) and Diane (Mike); step grandchildren, McKenzie, Zachary and Jesse.
A Celebration of Life for Mr. George Marchman will be held on Saturday, September 2, 2023 at 12:00pm (also via Zoom). Friends are cordially invited for a visitation one hour prior to the service. A catered reception will immediately follow the service.
HM Patterson and Son Canton Hill is honored to serve the Marchman family during this difficult time.
