James Halcott "Jimmie" Sasser, Jr., 71, of Marietta, Georgia passed away on June 21, 2017. He was born in Miami, Florida on June 17, 1946 to the late James "Doc" and Myrtis Sasser. He was a 1964 graduate of South Dade High School in Homestead, Florida and a graduate of Miami Dade College where he received his Associate of Arts degree. He and his wife moved to Atlanta in 1976 and, after a long career in sales, he retired from DeKalb County Parks and Recreation after a 20-year career.
Jimmie's love of music permeated every aspect of his life. A talented singer and guitar player, he first picked up a thrift-shop guitar and 50 cent music book in his early teens and spent countless hours teaching himself to play. His first band in high school was The Roadrunners, followed by The Kidds, a very successful 60's-era rock band in which Jimmie played bass and which toured the country for several years. It was during this period that he met Marcia, his faithful "groupie" who, with her many girlfriends and because of her love of dance, frequented many of the lounges in the Miami-Miami Beach area where The Kidds played. Following their marriage in 1968, Jimmie was never without a part-time band playing country and 60's-70's rock, in which he sang and played bass and guitar, both in Miami and the Atlanta area.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years Marcia Sasser, his sister Sharon Golgan of Austin, Arkansas and her children, Lisa, Jamie and Lindsey and his sister- and brother-in-law, Gail Jensen and Dave Akins. Jimmie and Marcia had many dogs throughout their life together, most of which were Miniature Schnauzers. Their love of dogs led them to their involvement with Our Pal's Place, a local dog (and some cats) no-kill rescue and adoption organization which rescues dogs from kill shelters and finds homes for them. For many years, they both volunteered at OPP events and contributed monetarily to their wonderful and selfless efforts. Jimmie leaves behind their beloved 16-year old schnauzer, Tori.
Expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of donations to Our Pal's Place, 4508 Canton Road, Marietta, Georgia 30066, http://www.ourpalsplace.net. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
