I was so sorry to hear of Coach John Barrett's passing.  I knew that he had retired from Life University & I had been missing him being on Campus.  He was a wonderful person with a pleasant personality & a great big smile on his face. He was a great Coach & Mentor to the Basketball Team & all all of us on Campus.Thank you for the wonderful memories Coach Barrett.  Rest in Peace. My sincere sympathy & prayers go out for all of coach Barrett's family.

Coach Barrett you were a great man and influenced my life in the little time that I was at Life. Thank you for everything you had done.

John was a great coach and mentor to the Life University athletes.  We missed him when he retired and will continue to miss him.  

I'm terribly sorry to hear the news of John's passing. I grew up with him and knew him as Johnny.  The Barrett family and mine were very close friends.  Remembering the family in prayer at this difficult time.

I knew John Barrett years ago -- I remember when Phillip and Matthew were born.  He showed absolute devotion to his sons, and he was a generous friend.

Since we grew up with John (Johnny to us) we have fond memories of lots of fun and good times with he and his family. We send our love and prayers for all of the family knowing that God will comfort you in days ahead.

I feel certain that John would say "I have Loved and was Loved - I have achieved the Human miracle". My most genuine sympathies and comforts to Anna-Maria and John's extended Family.

Dearest Anna, My heart was broken when i heard, after having recently met John and talked to him, he came across as one of the nicest people i know. It is sad to see it is those we care most about, that have to leave us. I would like to express my deepest condolences to you and those who will be missing him most.

Getting to know John through the years as we competed was a pleasure and was shock to hear the news of his passing. He loved his players and loved the game of basketball. I was shocked when my childhood sweetheart, Marsha, notified me of the passing of our mutual good friend, Johnny. I had not seen Johnny since our teenage years or early 20's, as I had moved away from the area and lost touch. We all grew up together in the Baptist Tabernacle church in Atlanta. Another of our very close friends was Bill. At church, we were all  inseparable. I remember Johnny as one of the most talented and funniest people I ever knew. He was a terrific artist, and I loved to watch him draw cartoons. As a young man, I remember he was  a great fan of the rock band, The Who. He took me to one of their concerts so I could make photographs of them for him. He was a very generous guy. He also was musically talented. I went to his house one evening and he played a tape recording for me in which he had overdubbed multiple tracks of himself playing all the instruments on the song, as well as singing it. I just wish that I had stayed in touch with this most interesting and closest of my childhood friends. I'll see you again, Johnny, on the other side.

I have many treasured memories of my childhood friend Johnny, who I have not seen in almost 45 years. He not only mentored and inspired many athletes during his career as a coach, but as my childhood friend he was the one who taught me how to throw a baseball. Even when he was 10 years ago, he had several natural talents that I often envied. He was an incredibly gifted athlete, and as a teenager I remember him throwing a baseball farther than I have still ever seen anyone throw. He had an artistic gift as a cartoonist, and as a child he would often draw on index cards during church services at the Tabernacle, which made the services much more tolerable for me and our other friends. We all wanted to sit close to him so that we could watch him draw and perhaps be gifted with one of his drawings. He was a magnet and it seemed like others were always drawn to him, yet he always made me feel like I was a special person. When I recall ages 10 to 20, I think of Johnny as someone who always seemed happy, had a great sense of humor, and would tell stories that were always entertaining and humorous. I never properly thanked him for making that time in my life better, so let all who read about him know that there are probably countless others whose lives have been made better because of him. I was fortunate enough to work with John during my time as Assistant Sports Information Director at Life University in 1998-1999. He was a great coach and a terrific person on top of that. We stayed in touch through the years and he tried to bring me back to Life a few years back, but it didn't work out. Still, he was a wonderful friend and we will all miss him. I was stunned and heartbroken upon learning of his passing. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. God bless!
