

John Philip Barrett, 66, of Marietta went home to the Lord on May 23, 2017. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia on February 10, 1951. He grew up in Atlanta and graduated from Oglethorpe University. A life-long lover of all sports, John developed a passion for coaching as a teenager. He devoted his career to mentoring young athletes to achieve their best in sports and academics. He spent most of his career as a basketball coach and later as Athletic Director at Life University. During this time, teams from Life University won several National Championships. He was a devoted Christian and loved the Lord. John married the love of his life, Anna-Maria Morgan Barrett, on April 16, 2003.
He is survived by his mother, Greta Clemmons Barrett; his loving wife, Anna-Maria Morgan Barrett; 2 sons: Philip David Barrett, John Matthew Barrett; 2 sisters: Catherine (Carter) McCallum, Mary Ann (Gary) Engel; brother-in-law, Albert Morgan; sister-in-law, Rita (Tim) Richardson; mother-in-law, Marisa Morgan and many nieces and nephews. John is preceded in death by his father, Philip Shaw Barrett and father-in-law, Henry Morgan.
The family will receive friends on Friday, May 26 from 5 pm until 8 pm at H.M. Patterson and Son Canton Hill Chapel in Marietta. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 27 at 3 pm at H.M. Patterson and Son Canton Hill Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
