Our hearts go out to the Murphys. So many fond memories of Ryan in sports (baseball, basketball). Ryan was so coachable and a very talented and earnest player. Please know you're all in our prayers!

Of you.   I attended CrossFit with Ryan for years.  I didn’t know him well but I still feel your pain and wanted to write.   I recently lost a loved one to bi polar illness in August.   The grief is tough.   If you need to reach out please do so.   I will keep you all close in thoughts and prayers.   I understand how you feel.

I had the pleasure of working out with Ryan at CrossFit East Cobb. He was always fun to be around and was the type of athlete I always aspired to be. Ryan will be missed.

Mary Ellen and Tom, I am heartbroken to learn of the passing of your beautiful son Ryan. Sending love and prayers to you. May his memory always  be for a blessing.

Ryan and I were friends for almost 30 years. We used to call him Sven which was a child’s way of saying our big, Swedish best friend. Our friendship started before I turned 10 playing east side baseball. Our friendship in childhood ranged from a love of sports, to concerts, to video games, days and nights with friends, to church and everything in between. We spent hundreds of nights together at a combination of his house, my house, John Holland’s, Sam Provano’s, John Lee’s, the Chiluski’s and many others. I still remember it like it was yesterday watching the goo goo dolls concert in his basement with both family and friends. It to date is still a memory that sits in my head any time one of their songs come on.  

As we became adults our friendship grew into talks about business, stock trading, big world ideas, his time at Stanford and the same, consistent love of sports and music.  Ryan was a great friend to me for a very long time. Ryan was one of the most intelligent people I’ve ever been around. If I had to imagine, graduating from somewhere like Stanford would’ve been a walk in the park for him. He had an infectious smile, laugh and a true warriors mentality for those that he cared about most. He made me feel like I was one of those people.  It’s hard to process the loss of such a such a good person.  Ryan (Sven) - you will be missed greatly my friend. I love you brother 🙏🙏❤️❤️

The holidays together were always the best. Ryan always had the best sense of humor, compassion and smile.  He brought happiness to every room he walked in

Never saw a falcons game we didn’t like - can’t forget times at the Georgia dome together.

Every holiday season we’d come back from college and train together at LA fitness in East Cobb.  Ryan would always push me to be in better shape by the time I went back to school.

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of Ryan. He was always kind to me &  I always enjoyed being around him. I pray for peace for his soul & comfort for his beautiful family.

The night before Tucker and Tori’s wedding, I had arrived late to the hotel and missed the dinner with everyone that had arrived earlier that day. When I got there, everyone in the family was going to bed. Instead of going to bed with everyone, I asked if anyone would stay up and have a drink, Katherine and Ryan offered to stay up with me. We had some cheap wine and caught up on the night and we were winding down. As we were finishing up, we see the police come into the lobby and ask the front desk where room 708 was. Katherine and I realized that was our room and Megan was inside. Panicked, we ran after the police. By the time we made it up there, the police informed us that she accidentally called 911 while trying to order a Diet Coke from room service, anddd they mentioned she may have been over served. They also mentioned that her C-pap machine was on but she wasn’t wearing it. If you don’t know, Megan doesn’t wear a c-pap. So we find her and realize the police thought her sound machine was a c-pap. We laughed hysterically and it’s one of our favorite stories. We loved him so much.

Katie and I simply remember the bear hugs from Ryan. And specifically from our wedding when we made the rounds, he had the biggest best hugs. 
Katie said to me after “now that’s a hug, Mark. I like that cousin!”

We’ll miss Ryan forever. ❤️

Ryan loved the water. Whether it was a still lake at dawn, a quiet stretch of river, or the vast calm of the sea, he found a kind of peace there that few ever do. Water spoke to him, not in words, but in the rhythm of its patience and quiet understanding that to move forward you must also know how to be still.
 
 Ryan and I also shared a gift for listening. Really listening. You could sit beside him for hours without saying a thing, and somehow feel lighter when you left. He never filled silence just to fill it, he honored it, trusted it, understood that peace often lives in the spaces between words. That calm was part of who he was. Steady, grounded, and endlessly kind.
 
 Now and forevermore, when I go to the water, I will feel his energy and spirit. The water carries his calm, his laughter, his patience. The slow current and moving wake will catch the light the same way they did when he’d blow bubbles 60 feet deep. 
 
 Ryan taught me that peace isn’t about escaping the noise, it’s about leaning in and learning to listen through it. And though he’s gone, that lesson remains. Every time I sit by the water and let it speak, I will hear him in its stillness. He’s part of it now, part of every quiet wave, every breath of wind, every moment of calm that reminds me to simply listen and let things flow.

Mossman Gorge is a magical place in Australia that I had the privilege of exploring. Our time there was something I still can’t believe I got to experience. The rock riding with Ryan, Tucker and myself was exhilarating. It was a quintessential younger brother/cousins moment for me where I watched the older kids dive head first into the adventure and followed with weariness. The highlight of this was the rope bridge, which I was extremely scared because of my fear of heights. Ryan and Tucker were in their own world of adventurousness, and decided to start jumping on the bridge. I can still feel the fear, but I still followed them around that park like a puppy. I remember having trepidations of swimming in the water, but as I watched them jump in those fears washed away. I just wanted to be with the older kids on this next adventure. We sat in the water of Mossman Gorge and threw the go pro back and forth until I almost lost it. That day will be how I always remember Ryan.

The two memories that run through my head most when I think of Ryan both centralize around snakes.
The first was when I was young, and I believe Ryan was in his teen years. The Strohmayer boys were on another Atlanta adventure with their Murphy cohorts. After a day of boating, adventures and overall joy, we found ourselves in a quagmire. There was a snake between us and the mainland. Ryan sprung to action like an action hero, and disposed of the snake. This was Ryan, adventurous and bold. 
The second story comes from the trek to Australia. This was the most intimate trip we had with Ryan because it was the Strohmayer boys, our mom, Aunt Mary Ellen and Ryan. My fondest memories in life come from this trip and Ryan was central is so many. The story we all love to share is the snake in the road. After a day of adventure, we wondered our way back home and were surprised by a speed bump on the road. This was no speed bump, but instead a large snake stretched across the Australian road. After 8 wheels ran over this poor snake, we all had the same reaction: we need to go see what we ran over. Ryan and Tucker led the search as we looked nearby to see where the snake had gone. It was a fruitless effort as the snake had slithered away. It reminds me of the curiosity and sense of wonder we all share, and how those flourished when we were all together in Australia.

I am so incredibly sorry to hear about Ryan's passing. He was such a large part of my early adult years and will forever be ingrained in my high school memories, which are always sparked whenever I hear the Red Hot Chili Peppers.  He was the life of the party and was incredibly caring. I am very grateful to have known him.

Despite Ryan growing up in Atlanta Country Club, we always considered him part of our “Blackland” crew. We spent entire weekends in the woods, playing backyard football, and having sleepovers at John Holland’s house or at my parents’ place.

One weekend, we were all at John Holland’s house and had rented It—we were looking forward to being terrified, but Ryan had other plans. He cracked jokes the whole time, making fun of the over-the-top characters and dated graphics. We laughed so hard and for so long that Mr. Johnson had to yell down the stairs at 2 a.m. to turn the lights out. I still think about that night—and about Ryan, who I’m pretty sure was the one who finally pushed Mr. Johnson to make us go to sleep.

Our friendship carried on through high school and into college, when he came back home to visit. I regret not taking advantage of him living just an hour away after he moved back to Georgia. We should have hung out more, and I’m terribly sad that we won’t be able to.

I’m so sorry for your loss. Whatever fires were at his back, I truly believe that God’s mercy has welcomed him home and granted him peace.

I was a fraternity brother of Ryan's at Stanford. I was so saddened to hear of his passing. He was kind,  he was earnest, he had a wry and playful sense of humor, he was easy to be around, and he cared deeply about his friends. I will remember him so fondly.
