

Thomas Edwin Howard, 90, of Marietta, Georgia went to be with his Lord & Savior on May 4, 2015. An Atlanta native, Tom was born on July 23, 1924. The highlight of his youth was winning the 1937 Atlanta Soap Box Derby. He went on to Akron, Ohio and placed 5th in the national competition. He attended Hoke Smith Jr High and was in the 1942 graduation class of Tech High School. Tom proudly served in the Army Air Force in WWII with the 1st Air Commando Group stationed in Burma and Asansol, India. After returning home from the war, he attended Georgia Tech but left to begin his 34-year career with General Motors, Chevrolet Division. Tom met and married the love of his life, Elsie White in 1948 and was devoted to her for 65 years before her death in 2013. After his retirement in 1989, he worked several years as Fleet Manager at Days Chevrolet in Acworth. Tom is survived by his loving family – son, Steve Howard (Anne), daughter Pat Arnold (Steve), 5 grandchildren – Stephen Howard, Scott Howard, Chris Arnold (Kathleen), Emily Slater (Sam) and David Arnold, 2 great grandchildren – Myer and Wesley Arnold, several nieces and nephews. Sincere appreciation goes to his loving caretakers, Beverly Huley and Cathy James as well as the team at Heritage Hospice in Marietta. The funeral will be held on Friday, May 8 at 1:00 with visitation and refreshments from 11:30-1:00 at Mt Vernon Baptist Church, 850 Mt Vernon Hwy, NW, Sandy Springs, 30327. Interment will follow at Arlington Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Mount Vernon Baptist Church.
