Vicki was born on September 23, 1949, in Kermit, TX, to George Martin and Melba Abell Martin. Her family moved to Pampa, TX, when she was five. They were members of the First Baptist Church where Vicki gave her heart to Christ at an early age. Her upbringing, with her only sister Pam, was a sanctuary of love and a vacation spot for Barbie dolls and roller skates.
Following a long line of Texas Tech graduates, Vicki began her college days in 1968, majoring in Elementary Education. While studying at Tech, she met the love of her life, Dan Alpern from San Antonio, TX, and in 1972 they married. In 2022 they celebrated their GOLDEN anniversary.
Vicki lived the kind of life God would want to bless, and bless He did!
First, with work that served others. Following in her mother’s footsteps, Vicki taught language arts at Mabry and Dickerson middle schools in Cobb County. She incorporated song lyrics, bean bags chairs and dancing hamsters to keep her students engaged and found great joy traveling to China for mission trips teaching English.
Second, with rich friendships. One of Vicki’s greatest attributes was investing in others and if you met her, she’d find out all about you and then genuinely care for your needs. Living in the Chimney Lakes neighborhood for thirty-seven years she developed the deepest of relationships with friends who called themselves The Lakers. Even in her final weeks, the incredible 6th floor team at Northside Hospital quickly became like family, and family was the greatest blessing of all.
Vicki was a selfless mother who gave her daughters, Amy and Megan, a love for the three Bs: Bible, Beatles and Broadway. She extended her unconditional love when Amy’s best friend Michael Hanz became a part of the family and when her daughters married Ben Cosh and Ben Fleming. Her grandchildren will remember her as generous, fun-loving and always having a treat on hand. Decades of memories will be cherished by them all.
Vicki is preceded in death by her father and mother. Those remaining to carry on Vicki’s legacy are her husband Dan Alpern, her two daughters: Amy Alpern Cosh and husband Ben Cosh, and Megan Alpern Fleming and husband Ben Fleming. Vicki was called BB by her four grandchildren: Jamie and George Cosh, and Jack and Ali Beth Fleming. Vicki is survived by her only sister, Pam Martin Kanaly from Edmond, OK, and four first cousins.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 4pm, January 12, at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church with Pastor Steven Bonham officiating.
