

He was born January 3, 1922 in Bryson City, NC to the late Arther Watkins and Cora Lane Watkins. He was a people person. He was a decorated WWII veteran of the United States Army. He served under George Patton 3rd Army, but most of all, he served in God’s Army for many years. Mr. Watkins was a lifelong believer in the Holiness faith. He was the last charter member of South Marion Pentecostal Holiness Church.
In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by his brother, Polly Watkins.
Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Carrie Lois Watkins of the home; one son, Ronnie Watkins of Nebo, NC; two daughters, Betty Lonon and husband, Richard of Marion, NC and Shirley Elliott and husband, Larry Elliott of Nebo, NC; two brothers, Dillard Watkins of Marion, NC and John Watkins of Hickory, NC; three sisters, Elizabeth Sutton of High Point, NC, Vela Styles of Bryson City, NC and Ada Willis of Sylvia, NC; two grandchildren, Joseph Lonon of Marion, NC and Ashley Kinnison and husband, Matthew of OH. Mr. Watkins was looking forward to seeing his first great-granddaughter, Breanna Leigh Kinnison, in October.
Services will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, August 6, 2010 in McCall Memorial Chapel at Kirksey Funeral Home in Marion, with Rev. Harry Kidd, Rev. Billy Connor and Rev. Clifton McCurry officiating. Burial will follow at Glenwood Community Cemetery where military honors will be held. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
