
Margaret Chapman Hollifield, age 90, widow of J.T. Hollifield, died Saturday, June 29, 2013 at her residence with her family at her side. Born on December 30, 1922, in Rutherford County NC, she was the daughter of the late James Alvin and Virgie Wilson Chapman. She was a graduate of Nebo High School and was later trained by the Dept. of the Navy to be a machinist at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria VA. Her experiences making torpedoes during World War II were recorded for the Upstate History Museum in Greenville, SC as a part of their Soldiers Stories WWII living history.
In addition to her husband and parents, Margaret was preceded in death by her son, Jay Terry Hollifield, Jr., her sister, Claudia Chapman, and three brothers and sisters-in-law: Mack and Elizabeth Price Chapman, Tom and Ruth Woody Chapman and Roy and Margaret Brooks Chapman. Surviving are a daughter, N. Lucinda Hollifield; four grandchildren: Brian Hollifield and Weylin Brown, Amanda Hollifield and Scott Banks, Amy Wright and husband, Rob; Emily Alongio and husband, Allman; a great-granddaughter, Mia Wright;a daughter-in-law, Becky Hamilton Hollifield; and a sister, Flata Styles and husband, Lawson.
Margaret was a member of Travelers Rest United Methodist Church and the Smith Traveling Fellowship of Northside United Methodist Church. A longtime volunteer and leader with the Old Ninety Six Girl Scout Council, she was retired from The Greenville County Library. She was a skilled bridge player and participated in a number of bridge clubs over the years.
A Graveside Service will be held at 1:30 PM on Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at Oak Grove Cemetery in Marion, NC. A reception will follow the service at Kirksey Funeral Home. A Celebration of Margaret’s Life will be held in Greenville, SC at a later date.
