

Charles Newton passed away on October 8, 2022 at the age of 79. He was born in Natchez, Mississippi to the late Bessie Newton. Charles is survived by his devoted wife of 36 years, Mrs. Linda G. Newton; his sister, Sophia M. Newton; his children, Vaughn Newton (Karen), Lois Lee, Tynaro Diaz, Stacey Diaz Singleton, Allison “Tina” Henry (Stafford), Joel Caldwell; his three grandchildren, LLonisha Lee McElhaney (Lamon), Aiden Diaz, Brooklin Diaz and his two great-grandchildren, Landon and Legend McElhaney. He also leaves behind, to rejoice and cherish his memory a host of family members, devoted friends, and neighbors. Charles is preceded in death by his two brothers-in-law, Belmont Gray and Michael Yopp; and his sister-in-law, Brenda Gray.
Charles began is education in New Orleans, Louisiana. Upon given the opportunity to further his education out of state, he attended William J. Palmer High School in Colorado Springs, Colorado. This is where his participation in football and other organized sports really blossomed. He received an athletic scholarship to Adams State University in Alamosa, Colorado where he further exceled in swimming, diving, and track and field. And although he was active in many athletic disciplines, he found his true calling in aquatics. HE LOVED EVERYTHING ABOUT IT!! He had a love and great passion for educating the young and old on anything to do with aquatics, whether it was swimming, competitive swimming, water safety, lifeguarding, water aerobics, etc.
He spent most of his professional career working for the New Orleans Recreation Department (NORD) until retiring in 2011. He also taught aquatics at the Boys and Girls club and at St. Marks United Methodist Church in New Orleans, Louisiana. Charles was a member of the Institute of Divine Metaphysical Research (IDMR) from 1990 until his passing.
In addition to aquatics, some of his favorite pastimes included fishing, horseback riding and watching old western movies and television shows.
Charles touched many lives along his earthly journey. He left an incredible lasting legacy and will always be loved and remembered by everyone as “COACH”.
