

Jesse N. Sanders, Sr. passed away at the age of 98 on Monday, August 23, 2021 at Ochsner-Meadowcrest Hospital in Gretna, LA. He was born on August 17, 1923 in Mississippi to the late Jesse William Sanders and Eula Mae Diamond Sanders of Ellisville, MS. He was the husband of the late Betty Jean Scales Sanders, his wife of 55 years. He was a father to two sons, Jesse N. Sanders, Jr. (Mary) of Mize, Mississippi and Bradley John Sanders (Shannon) of New Orleans. He was the grandfather of two grandchildren, who fondly called him “Grampy”, John Christopher Sanders (Tukta) of Bangkok, Thailand and Abbey Claire Sanders of New Orleans. He is survived by his sister, Dorothy Burns (Jim) of Dickinson, Texas and brother, Jack Sanders (Nella) of Laurel, Mississippi. Other survivors include nephews; Henry Entrekin (Cheryl), Boyce Holder, Bobby Hood (Sue), Jerry Hood (Marsha), Jimmy Hood (Myrna), Billy Sanders (Deborah), Larry Sanders (Marsha) and Rodney Sanders (Mary), and nieces; Debbie Sanders Denbleyker (Rick), Sarah Entrekin, Gloria Jean McCaleb (Jimmy), and Trish Sigler. Jesse was preceded in death by his sisters Carlene Entrekin (Garland), and Voncile Hood (Sidney), and his brothers Walter V. Sanders (Opal) and Willie Odell Sanders (Mildred).
Growing up In Ellisville, MS, he joined the Navy as a teenager during WWII. He was a Navy Corpsman (Medic) assigned to the Sixth Marine Division on Guadalcanal. He was awarded the Silver Star for his acts of gallantry in combat. He also was a recipient of The Good Conduct Medal and received two battle stars given for Guadalcanal and Okinawa. He served with the 22nd Marines on Okinawa.
After being discharged from the service, he went to work for Chevron, USA , where he retired after 38 years of loyal service. While working for Chevron, he lived in Venice and Gretna, Louisiana. He was transferred to Raleigh, MS for a short time then moved back to Gretna where he lived until his death.
Due to Hurricane Ida, the services for Jesse have been postponed. A graveside service will still be held Friday, September 3, 2021 at Westlawn Cemetery, in Gretna, Louisiana. Having made his arrangements in advance, Jesse asked that in lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Woodland Presbyterian Church in Algiers.
